"See, Mommy?" Annie said, putting her phone in Jennifer's face. "We haven't gotten to do any real partying or anything."
Jennifer realized her newly 18-year-old eyes had no trouble reading the text, which did look like an official message from the school. "Okay, I guess," she said.
"I didn't get anything," Kimmi observed.
Bob said, "Oh, concubines don't go to school."
"What?!" exclaimed Jennifer.
"I wish I didn't go to school," said Candi.
There was a flash around her neck, and a star appeared next to the letters of her name. About a second and a half later, another flash surrounded her and she disappeared.
"Where did she go?!" Jennifer practically wailed.
"I guess Jason counted that as a wish to be a concubine, so she gets to belong to someone else now, rewarding them," said Bob, matter-of-factly.
"And no more school?" asked Jennifer angrily. "She hasn't even finished fourth grade!"
"I guess if her owner allows her to read, she might --"
"If her owner allows her to read?"
"Come on, Jen, it'll be okay," said Kevin, putting an arm around her.
"I wish Candi was back and not a concubine!" Jennifer blurted. "I wish concubines went to school! I wish concubines could go to school!"
Nothing obvious happened, and Bob said, "Like I said, Jason probably won't grant wishes or answer prayers unless it's amusing or arousing or something like that. Or if it's his old business manager. So far, everything I've wished for has been granted. I want to help you replace your daughter, so..."
