Jacob sits on the floor, already bored out of his mind. He considers wetting himself again, just to having something exciting happen. A daycare worker he does recognize begins rounding up the toddlers.
“Come on, kiddies, snack time!” the daycare worker says. He grabs Jacob’s hand.
“No, Lyle, Jakey can’t have the regular snack,” the worker at the front desk says. Jacob blinks in surprise. He can’t? “His parents bring special organic snacks for him, along with breastmilk.”
“Breastmilk?” Lyle says, voicing exactly what Jacob was thinking. “He’s two!”
“They supplement his diet with it.” The front desk worker rolls his eyes. “They’re rich, hippie people with weird ideas.”
“Well, where are his snacks, then?” Lyle asks.
“According to his file, at this time of day, he’s supposed to have a bottle of breastmilk, not solid food. Kelsey will take care of it.” Kelsey reappears and scoops Jacob into her arms.
“I’ve already got the bottle warmed up!” she chirps as she carries Jacob over to a rocking chair. She sits down, holding Jacob in her lap, and grabs the bottle of milk off a side table. “Drinky drinky!” Jacob keeps his mouth closed, but Kelsey jams the nipple into his mouth. Instincts take over and he suckles the milk down greedily. “Good boy!”
After his “snack”, Jacob is put in a crib for a nap. The warm milk lulls him to sleep quickly. When he wakes up, his diaper is messy and wet, and a man and woman are staring at him. Presumably, they’re the parents of the toddler that Jacob was confused for. Squirming in his full diaper, Jacob stares back, wondering what they think.
