Unlike the night before, Chris had trouble sleeping. According to the doctors, his drowsiness the first night had been caused more by the virus than by the injection. His body had gone to sleep in order to reserve as much energy as possible for his extreme changes. Now that most of the transformation had finished, less sleep was required.
Tossing and turning, Chris tried to come to grips with the new sensations of his body. Thankfully, his new wings could fold up and retract enough not to be injured by him lying on them. They were also much tougher and more flexible than they seemed. Still, he could feel them as naturally as he could his other limbs, not uncomfortable but hard to ignore. Kai had told him he would get used to it.
The same issue went for certain other things, as well. Beneath the covers, Chris prodded his breasts. Er, her breasts. "I'm female now," she reminded herself with another squeeze. "Got to get used to that."
Meanwhile, she felt grateful that her breasts were not painfully heavy despite being so relatively large. Gravity seemed to have less effect when one was the size of a Barbie doll. Once her fairy powers kicked in, it would have almost no effect at all, or so she had been told. Fairy flight was one of those abilities that just worked despite all the physical laws saying it shouldn't be possible with their body-shape.
Soon, I'll be able to fly, Chris mused with wonder. What will that be like?
Contemplating these things, the new fairy finally drifted off to sleep.
The next day, Chris woke up to find Kai and Lisa once more at her side. Accepting their help standing up, she discovered that she was now shorter than Kai, who was 11 inches tall. Clearly, her body had altered just a bit further during the night. Carefully, they took her measurements. She now stood only nine and a half inches, towards the lower end of the "small fairy" range but still taller than Lisa by a half inch.
Much to her shock, her weight now came in at a measly 1.2 lbs (0.54 kg).
"It's like the ultimate diet, right?" Kai laughed. "Even I'm under two pounds."
Chris knew better than to ask where over 99% of her body weight had gone. The virus pretty much ignored most laws of physics and biology. No wonder so many people reacted with fear. It seemed like the very fabric of the universe was unraveling one infection at a time.
After the measurements were taken, the three fairies sat down to enjoy breakfast in bed. Or breakfast on bed, to be exact. The tray on which the food was served proved to be perfect for a fairy picnic, allowing them to lounge on the blankets while eating. In the meantime, the meal was about the size of a normal human serving with scrambled eggs, hash browns, and fruit salad. It shocked Chris how much they could eat, but she recalled how quickly fairies burned off those calories.
After a while, Lisa spoke up while munching away at a grape nearly the size of her head. "Have you decided what to do with your name? It's no problem if you keep your old one-"
"Like me," said Kai, pointing to herself.
"-since your name can be unisex, but most people will assume it's short for Christina or something. Most female fairies just change their names to something less ambiguous."
Chris nodded. She had read that fairies were considered one of the more feminine races, despite having some males. (A few races had no males at all, though for whatever reason, male-only races were nigh nonexistent and so far, mostly non-humanoid.) In fact, human standards tended to view male fairies as almost androgynous even though most male fairies identified themselves firmly as male. Females generally expressed themselves femininely, regardless of what gender they had been before getting the virus. Whether these things came from culture, biology, or even some side-effect of the race change, it was still being discussed by experts.
"I've been thinking about changing my name to Flora."
"Oh, that's a nice popular fairy name," Lisa complimented brightly. "It sounds very cute and nature-y. Is that like flora and fauna?"
Chris, or Flora, explained, "Well actually, I started off thinking of the name Crystal, since I could always go by Crys. Then, I thought of my coloration and started looking up purple crystals on my phone and came across Fluorite. After that, I came up with Fluora, but I didn't want to explain the U to everyone. So, it's Flora now."
A moment of awkward silence followed. Flora blushed. "But we can go with flora-fauna. Sure."
Kai and Lisa shared a look before giggling. "It's fine, kid." Kai reached over to rub the new fairy's shoulder. "Welcome to the fairy world, Flora."
Flora smiled. "Thanks."
