As the day went on, Danny grew increasingly frustrated at the lack of obvious changes. He didn't have any periods in the same class as Gabe and Terry on Fridays, so he could only catch glimpses of them during lunch and in the halls, but he didn't notice anything yet. Was Terry's hair darker? Did Gabe look a shade more tan? He couldn't tell. It might just be wishful thinking. When he'd given Sasha the curse through the chronoviac he'd made it so that the changes would start anywhere between an hour and a day after she cheated on him with someone, but now he was regretting it.
As school got out and Danny followed Gabe and Terry down the halls, though, he got an idea. He'd been in the middle of resigning himself to a boring weekend at home without access to his new victims, but then he remembered: he'd have the house to himself most of the weekend. His parents were going on a quick business trip starting later that night, and Jin usually spent Friday evenings with his stupid D&D group. Danny sighed internally at what a loser his brother was, but the annoyance didn't last long. What he'd thought of as a problem had now turned into an opportunity.
Forcing his face into an easy going grin so they wouldn't guess he'd overheard their conversation that morning, he jogged up beside the two jocks.
"Hey dudes!" he said lightly, clapping Terry on the back.
The two jocks exchanged a knowing look, but then turned and gave hime say going smiles.
"Hey Danny," Gabe said, "What's up?"
"My folks are gone for the weekend and I have the house to myself, so I was wondering if you guys wanted to come chill?" Danny said, voice carefully casual as he watched their reactions.
Terry raised his eyebrows.
"And you thought of us? I mean, thanks man, but aren't you more tight with Jackson and his gang?"
Danny made a derisive noise.
"Nah, that's the point. I wanna get to know you guys, you seem like chill dudes. Come on, we'll have the place to ourselves — my older bro stays in his room half the time anyway. Maybe we can invite some chicks over, who knows?"
The jocks exchanged another look.
"It's probably a nice house, right?" Gabe said to Terry, almost as if Danny wasn't there, "He's Asian, parents are probably scientists or programmers or something, bound to be rich."
Terry frowned in thought, then turned to Danny.
"You got a pool?"
Danny grit his teeth, and forced his face to stay bright and casual.
"Sure do."
"Then we're in. We can take my car, what's your address?"
Danny told them, and walked over to the parking lot, laughing and joking the ride home but portraying no outward sign of the real reason he was so excited. Now he'd get to watch the changes from up close...
