One thing Taylor had been thinking at the back of her mind when she made James into Janice was that Darla needed a "trans mom"--an older trans woman who could serve as a mentor and role model. So she was interested in seeing how they got along, and possibly interested in giving a nudge or two, when Taylor, Maggie, Janice, Darla and Dana had a "girl's day out" shopping and eating and getting their hair styled. (Good thing, Taylor thought, she had caught that viral outbreak in China in time to suppress it before it became a global pandemic.) Janice and Darla hit it off immediately, despite the contrast between Darla's girliness and Janice's sweatshirt and jeans take on womanhood.
So that was good, and the fact that Darla and Janice weren't receiving any hostility was also good, although unsurprising considering how the culture of the community was changing under Taylor's influence. What was bugging Taylor, though, was Dana. She understood that Dana knew who she was, but when she had followed up on it later than night there had been some kind of defense, a magical defense her powers should have easily overridden but somehow hadn't. It wasn't like battering the walls of a fortress that wouldn't come down, it was like trying to grasp something that was always just a bit too slippery. In a way, Taylor thought, it was good that there was something she couldn't do--she didn't want to get spoiled or jaded by omnipotence--but it was also a little worrying.
