Mark blinked repeatedly, trying to clear the spots of out his vision. That was odd. Maybe they’d just run through a traffic camera spot? He hadn’t heard that the state was putting a new one in over here, but it wasn’t exactly surprising....and it wasn’t like he couldn’t afford it. After all, it was for a good cause—his little sister was having a baby!
Glancing over at his wife Alana, Mark smiled. Maybe he would be in Clark’s shoes in only a few months, he thought happily as he watched Alana shift in her seat to try and find a more comfortable position. He was well aware that strangers saw her as a trophy wife, with her auburn hair, large breasts, and the fact that she was in her mid twenties while he was rapidly approaching his fortieth birthday, but he thought she was the more beautiful woman he’d ever seen. They were going to start trying for a kid of their own tonight......assuming they ever got back from the hospital. Calling up to the rental car driver in the front seat—the guy had introduced himself as Tony, if Mark remembered correctly— to step on the gas, Mark settled back into his seat. Huh, that was weird. Some old book was sitting on the seat in between him and Alana. He knew he hadn’t brought it in, and Alana....well, she wasn’t much of a reader, so it must be Tony’s. Curious, Mark decided to flip it open....
Geez, Megan thought, that light was ridiculously bright. “You okay up there Tanya?” She called to her co-worker. It sure was nice of Tanya to agree to drive her and her daughter over to the hospital to see her older sister have her kid when Megan’s car wouldn’t start. Tanya had waved off Megan’s profuse thanks, just saying saying “hey, us girls have to stick together, right?”
Megan glanced over at her daughter, still happily coloring away. They’d been in such a rush to try and get over to the hospital that she hadn’t even bothered to make Alana change out of her Princess Elsa costume. One of her friends had been having a “princess-themed” birthday party, and Alana had been obsessed with Frozen ever since she’d seen it at school during “movie day.” Her blonde curls matched the costume quite well, actually, Megan thought with a smile.
Sooner than she thought they would, they’d pulled up in front of the hospital. Ushering her daughter out of the car, Megan turned to Tanya. “Let’s go see how Stephanie is doing.”
Hurrying inside, neither woman noticed that Alana had left her coloring book behind, and was now holding a strange old book.....
