My brother was both married to his wife and locked to his ventures. Until that one fate filled day when he discovered a pair of gold octagon shaped specticles his love of life was wife and family. He changed and began urgently spending his time working at a fevered pitch to gain wealth.
Some would call him a workaholic, I told him he'd gone crazy! In any case he was like a possesed with a goal, his one and only lust was now for more and more riches.
I suspect it was his tax form which made the I.R.S. insist on continual audits of his income and how he becme overnight the richest man in ten states. One year he earned $35,000 working for K-Mart and the next he earned nine million by working for himself in the securities market.
Kevin's wife and family ties were breaking down, but he carried on working for weeks without leaving his downtown penthouse and office. It began to take a toll even on him his anxiety for gaining wealth. He just keeled over one day and was rushed to the hospital. If was there they reported a blood pressure of 190/106 which he sustained and remained at until medicated. Then told by the doctor to rest or die soon he was ordered to return home and remain quiet for maybe a month.
Home he went but not without those queer glasses always held close and tightly in one hand. I went to him and since we be brothers and good longtime friends he began to open up, he told me of what scared him the most.
Kevin told me he could see both past and future events with his found pair of olden time specticles. I listened to his ranting story and said not a word thinking this must be part of his work phobia.
He then produced the glasses and told me to stand up and place them over my face. I did as told if only humoring a man I thought to be going crazy fro seeking wealth. He warned me urgently not to move or I'd be injured by what I saw in them.
He got up from his chair and aimed me toward the window facing the side street to the west of his house. Hansen street was in days long gone one of the main streets into town. He reminded me and warned me not to move but just stand there and see how the glasses performed.
I stood there looking out the window and saw instead of modern cars rolling past, those that did were few and mostly of the turn of the century types.
Quickly I removed the glasses only to see the present day common cars and trucks again driving past the window. Again he suggested I place them on my face but this time mention a date verbally, "1844!" I said.
Suddenly there were horse and wagons going by, they had teams of four and six horses heading them as people walking past were dressed in clothing of that time.
Again I removed the glasses and what I could see was the traffic and people of this present day.
"Marvelous!" was all I could remark.
Kevin smiled and had me sit down as he told me of how he attained his millions. He showed me a news paper and then placing the glasses on me again he told me to say a date one week in advance. I did, and the paper changed to that of some future date showing what went up and those that went down.
I understood then some of what he knew of those strange glasses and how he became an millionaire overnight.
