“An orphanage.”
“An orphanage?” the woman gasps. She tapes a fresh diaper on Laura, then slips on a T-shirt and pair of overalls. “Why?”
“Given the circumstances under which you found her, she’s probably already in the system.”
“Oh, that’s sad. Well, if it turns out she is in the system, and needs someone to take care of her, let me know. I’ll be more than happy to take her in. I’ve always wanted a daughter, after all.”
“We’ll keep that in mind,” the police officer says, taking Laura from the woman. Laura is brought out to the police car, where she is buckled into a car seat. Her bag, containing the dice, is placed on the seat next to her. During the drive, while the policemen are caught up in their conversation and not paying attention to her, she quickly sneaks the dice in their case out of the bag. She opens it and touches the dice.
Laura lets out a sigh of relief as she hears the familiar voice of the spirit of the dice, telling her that they’ve bonded to her. She tucks the dice into a pocket of her overalls. It’s shallow, but hopefully, that won’t be a problem.
They come to a stop outside the orphanage. The nicer of the policemen gets out of the car and removes Laura, leaving her bag behind. Presumably, they intend on using it to try to track down her family. There’s a soft clatter. Laura’s eyes widen. The dice case has fallen out of her pocket, landing on the street directly in front of the police car’s wheels.
Too in shock to do anything, Laura merely stares at the fallen dice case as she is brought to the orphanage and handed over to the young man who answers the door. She and the orphanage worker watch as the police car drives away, running over and breaking the dice.
Laura holds her breath, terrified about what effect the dice breaking will have.
