You watch, concealed behind the statue, as the two beasts enter the grove.
The black unicorn, a massive creature easily six feet high at the shoulder with an ivory mane and blazing, silver eyes, pawed the ground again, lowering it's pearl-white horn, apparently confused by the motion of the mammoth, red stag.
The stag paws the ground again with its cloven hoof and -with another snort- suddenly springs into action.
It gallops heavily across the grove towards the black unicorn, its antlers lowered. Easily as large, it had the heavier, natural weapons, but the unicorn's horn was longer and far, far more sharp.
You stay hidden, watching, as -suddenly- the stagnant waters of the circular pool at the center of the willow-dominated grove, explode upwards in a silver shower of radiance. Both creatures stop, the stag braying in a guttural snort of surprise, as the spray fell on them both.
Staring, you see the impossible happen for twice in one day. As the silver-glowing water mist falls on twin beasts, they, too, begin to glow and change. Each being, the red stag and the black unicorn, drop to the grassy grove floor, their bodies altering slowly.
You stare, seeing for the first time what it must have been like for you, as each of the creatures slowly changes and becomes bipedal.
Soon, the glow of the waters fades and each of the men, easily your own height, gets shakily to their hooved feet, looking at their hands, arms, and bodies in shock.
"What...what just happened?" snarls the deep voice of the stag. On his chest he wore a dark brown patch of fur shaped like a diamond, and he has also grown fetlocks, partially obscuring his cloven hooves. His antlers, still easily spanning six or seven feet from side-to-side, seemed to put him off-balance for a moment as he stood, looking down at his naked body.
"That's what I'd like to know," the black unicorn responds, looking across in the deeping evening twilight at the hart. "You attacked me and then, this... I changed again..."
The stag's eyes narrowed as he looked at the unicorn. "You... You were the one who changed me into that ... that glorified deer! And, just now, you changed me again, didn't you? Didn't you?!!"
"What? I've been wandering in this maze for three days, now! I've never seen you before, and it was someone else who changed me into this ... this ... thing!"
The stag lowers his head, baring his antlers to the unicorn and flexes his much larger muscles. "You think I don't know what I saw?" he snarled. "I spotted you, walking through the maze only a few hours ago... You looked at me and -suddenly- a silver light jumped from your horn and made me into ... into ... this!"
You can't hide any more. Even though both these men are as big as you -and in the case of the hart, bigger- they're about to come to blows. You step out from behind the statue and raise your hands, open-palms towards them.
"Wait; I think there's a misunderstanding!"
Both beasts spin on you as you approach.
"I just saw a silver light cover you both, changing you into ... into what you are, now! I was changed, too...!"
"Who the hell are you?" snarls the hart, a sharp, short breath snorting through his nostrils.
"I ... I'm just a guy who went for a walk in the park... I found my way through the hedges, here, and -well- got changed like the two of you..."
You leave out the part about eating the fruit, thinking that whatever changed you may be different from what changed them.
"That's what happened to me," the unicorn states, simply, still eyeing the big stag. "My name's Kevin; I was on break from the warehouse across the street from the park and thought I'd take a short jog through the hedge maze before... Well, before I got lost and changed into a black unicorn..."
The stag snorts derisively. "You got lost?"
"Yeah," Kevin says defensively. "I've been trying to find my way out for days, but this is the first time I've ever found the center..."
"Oh yeah?" the hart asks, suspiciously. "That still doesn't explain the light from your horn changing me! What about that?"
"Miller, dear, do not seek to lay blame where none is to be found..." comes a sweet, sing-song voice. "I changed you; changed all three of you, and -now- you should know why you were summoned here..."
Miller, the stag -or hart- turns, along with Kevin, the black unicorn, and yourself, the minotaur, towards the willow tree at the center of the grove. There, standing clad only in a soft, silvery light from the pool's waters, stands a naked woman. She has smooth skin with a faint, greenish tint to it, and long, woven hair cascading around her shoulders down to her ankles in back. She is whispery thin, with small breasts and no body hair save for her eyebrows and lashes.
"Who are you?" you demand to know, feeling a bit uncomfortable being naked, like this, in front of the strange woman.
"I am Nyseera; the last of the willow-maidens. I have brought you all here for a purpose and changed you into something more in keeping with your inner selves."
Miller stepped forward, his antlers now bowed slightly in the willow-maid's direction. "Inner selves? I hunt stags for a hobby, bitch... I'm not supposed to be some kind of deer!"
The woman smiled and shook her head slowly. The darkness of the grove continues to deepen as, finally, the sun sets and only the light from the pool at her feet illuminates the trees.
"So you say, but that is neither here nor there. My power was insufficient to change you fully into beasts who could speak with me and walk, upright, until you reached the center of the labyrinth. And, now, you will help me..."
"You see," she says, sounding sad, "I am the last of my kind, and I am dying..."
