In all the confusion of Hank’s sudden growth and everything, Eric had almost forgotten how the two had ended up with the jacket in the first place. He had stolen it from Kyle, and he had to make things right.
So at school on Monday, Eric headed for Kyle, who was putting stuff in his locker. He hung his head, feeling ashamed of himself.
Kyle looked up and saw his friend. For a minute nothing was said. Kyle’s face was expressionless.
Then Eric broke down and confessed everything. His theft, how he’d planned to wear the jacket, how Hank took it and was now a giant of a 5th grader.
When he was finished, there were tears in his eyes. But Kyle smiled and said, “I forgive you.”
“You do?” Eric asked, with a wobble in his voice.
“Sure! I’m already way bigger than before.” Kyle flexed a thick bicep and bounced his pecs to prove his point. “At Friday’s practice, Coach moved me to varsity. He didn’t question my growth or anything! I think I’ve gotten just about all I can ask for from that jacket. I’m the best freshman football player in maybe the whole conference now!”
Then he went on, “As a matter of fact, you and Hank can keep it. You guys need it more than me,” he laughed, giving Eric a noogie.
“Thanks, Kyle, for understanding,” Eric said gratefully.
“Hey, what are friends for?” Kyle replied.
