Mary's phone buzzed in her bag as she was eating her lunch. She picked it up and looked, it was from Mum.
'Sorry sweetie, something has come up at work so I won't be able to pick you up after school. Are you okay to walk today?' it read.
'Of course it's okay, I'll be fine!' she quickly text back. She was 16, of course she was capable of waking herself home. Besides, the private school was only a 15 minute walk away, and they lived in a nice area.
Mary resumed eating her lunch while vaguely paying attention to the conversation going on at her table. As usual though, her mind slipped back into her studies. Mary was an A+ student, and was intent on keeping it that way. Of course, this meant her social life generally suffered. She knew the people at her table and got on with them, but she didn't really consider them close friends. They never even hung out outside of school.
Mary was snapped out of her daydream by the bell, so she parted ways with her lunch companions and headed towards her Maths class. As she was in her element, learning new things, the rest of the day flew by and before she knew it she was starting her walk home.
