I entered the store and scanned for Sam. I saw her searching one of the costume racks.
“Found a costume yet?” I asked her.
“Oh, hey.” Sam smiled. “I have a costume in mind. I was just trying to see if I could find a better one. Give me a moment. It’s right here.” Sam turned around to the rack behind her. “Here it is.” She pulled out a dark-colored dress. She held it up in front of her, giving me a proper look. The dress was victorian-esque, primarily black with some dark red. It did give me Halloween vibes, though I couldn’t figure out exactly what kind of costume it was.
“It’s supposed to be a vampire costume.” Sam explained. Sam blushed a little before she continued. “After you’ve been messing with my life I now remember having a phase were I was obsessed with vampire novels. So, I figured it could be neat.”
“Sure.” I smiled. “It’s your pick. Now, are you going to try it out, or?”
“Yes! I’ll do that.” Sam enthusiastically hurried to the changing room clutching the dress.
I was left waiting outside the changing room. After a couple of minutes she came back out again.
“Ta-da!” Sam posed. “How do I look?”
She looked good. The dress fit her figure. Though, she didn’t look that much like a vampire. Sam had a bit off a girl next door vibe with brown hair and eyes. A look I liked, but it didn’t help much in pulling off the dark vampire look. Maybe if she had darker hair.
“You look great.” I complimented.
“Thanks!” she grinned. “It’s a nice dress, but, it’s not exactly what I’d hoped for. Like it barely passes for a costume. I don’t look much like a vampire do I?” Sam hinted.
I agreed with her. I thought about how Sam could look more vampire-like. She changed. Her hair turned black, starting from the tips working itself up to her scalp. Her face lost color as she turned paler, but it also gained color from makeup. Her lips got covered in dark red lipstick and her eyes got surrounded by heavy eye shadow.
Sam noticed her changes. She was looking at herself in the standing mirror. She seemed giddy, but shortly after her excitement waned.
“I don’t feel like a vampire.” she sighed.
“Was that what you were hoping for, turning into an actual vampire?”
“Maybe.” she smiled mischievously. “Though I guess this is the mildest thing you’ve forced on me.” She played with a black strand of hair, looking like she was contemplating something. “Anyways, I feel like getting out of this. The waist of this dress is killing me.”
Sam stepped back into the changing room. As I waited for her, I wondered about Sam's intentions. Was her choice of costume an attempt of something? At least I didn't accidentally turn her into a real vampire. All I did was cosmetic. Though, Sam looked pretty hot in dark colors. I wondered how she'd look like as a straight up goth.
Sam returned from the changing room. She was no longer wearing the costume, but she wasn’t wearing her old overalls either. Her old outfit which I'd picked out for her back then was already a little goth, but this way more extreme. It was all black. Thigh-high platform shoes adding an inch to her already decent height, studded shorts, a large buckled belt, a ripped t-shirt with an striped undershirt covering her arms.
“My clothes turned into this.” Sam gestured down at her outfit. “You know vampire don't equal goth, right?”
“It was where my mind wandered.” I explained. “I said I can’t perfectly control this.”
“Alright.” she sighed. “I guess it’s whatever. I think I look somewhat cool, but I don’t know. Like, you might have messed with my head and changed my taste.”
