Mrs Spencer or "Mum" as Chris now had to call her helped Chris into the doctors room. The female doctor indicated Chris or "Nancy" should lie down on the examination table. With "Mum's" aid Chris wiggled into position on the table. Mrs Spenser rearranged the long skirt she had insisted Chris wear as it had ridden up as Chris lay down. Chris didn't understand why she could not have worn Nancy's jeans. At least Mrs Spencer had allowed Chris to wear a a black windcheater over the lacy bra Mrs Spencer had told her to put on.
'So what happened to this ankle?' the doctor asked.
'I stood in a hole walking home on the dark last night'
'Did it hurt straight away?'
'It hurt but I was initially able to walk on it. However by the time I got home I had to be carried'
'It's very swollen. Tell me when it hurts' The doctor immediately began to prod at Chris's ankle.
'Ah!' It did hurt. Chris didn't need to fake. What had Nancy made her touch? She recognised shoes but whose? Surely Nancy wouldn't risk making Chris change in front of a doctor. It had to have been Nancy's own shoes. But why? Nancy had also said she should try and delay the examination. Too late now. The doctor was still prodding the ankle.
'Does that hurt?' the doctor was asking.
'Not particularly'
The doctor seemed puzzled. 'What about this?' Chris could feel pressure but not pain.
'No'
'Remarkable. I've never seen the like. Look the swelling is going down as we watch' The doctor was talking to Mrs Spencer, who had stayed in the room. When I first touched here Nancy winced. Now she barely feels it'
"Mum" uttered 'It's no longer swollen! What did you do? You must have magic fingers'
'I wish I knew' said the incredulous doctor. 'All I can think is that my prodding must have released something, a blockage or a pinched blood vessel. The fluid has somehow drained from Nancy's foot. I'm amazed how quickly though'
Chris looked at her ankle. It was still Nancy's ankle but it was looking normal once more. A mirror image of Chris's other ankle. Clearly she was still Nancy but Nancy without a swollen potentially broken ankle. It must have been Nancy's shoes in that bag. It had changed Chris back into a version of Nancy without a broken ankle. 'Why thanks Doctor. That was remarkable. I'm very thankful'
The doctor was looking at her fingers. 'I wish I knew how I did it. Try standing up. Does it hurt when you put weight on it?'
Chris climbed off the table and put some weight on the ankle. It didn't hurt at all. She couldn't hide the smile on her face. 'It feels no different to the other ankle'
'Maybe a bone had slipped out of place and I somehow manipulated it back into its correct position. But I'm still amazed at how quickly the swelling eased' The doctor was genuinely puzzled.
'So I guess I'm fixed and can go home?'
'Not so fast young lady. Doctor, Nancy has been avoiding visiting you as she knows she is due for a gyn checkup. While we are here can we make a booking. Maybe for next week?'
'Certainly. Make one on the way out. It very important Nancy. You need to have annual visits. It's not something you should avoid'
Chris didn't understand what the women were talking about, she nodded her head not committing to anything. The real Nancy could deal with this when they swapped back. Chris didn't want to know about it. She just wanted out of here and hopefully get back to her own house.
She did notice "Chris" and "Mary" were no longer waiting outside. There was no sign of them. She listened but didn't pay a lot of attention as Mrs Spencer paid the bill and made another appointment for Nancy on Monday. That would be Nancy's problem not hers.
