Dan struggled to pull himself together.
Literally. The business of finding himself bodiless, but conscious, perturbed him as he continued to monitor the situation inside the restaurant.
The chef cooked up half of the zapped lobsters, but orders for lobster from patrons that evening were conspicuously absent. As a new shift of customers entered the restaurant, unaware of the shocking incident at the lobster tank, the manager slashed the cost of a lobster meal by half. Some of the cooked lobsters sold, but not many.
Dan's discarded lobster body stayed in a plastic bucket with the armor-plated corpses of about a dozen other accidentally electrocuted lobsters. He managed to drift his tenuous presence closer to the bucket, which had been parked beneath a sink in the restaurant's kitchen, and dismissed as an overactive imagination that an unpleasant odor of decay had already begun to emanate from the surplus lobsters.
"I just wish I was back in my room," he thought to himself, picturing the location with considerable precision in his mind.
In the next instant he did some unexpected inter-dimensional slide that found him hovering over the unmade bed in his room.
He reacted with some surprise. He had suspected, mistakenly apparently, that his limbo of a current existence had been tied to the body of the zapped crustacean.
He used some willpower to levitate himself across the room toward the closed door... and then passed right through the door as if the wooden barrier existed as nothing more substantial than air molecules.
Kat! He needed to find his sister.
He found Kat lounging on her bed, head propped back on pillows, and thumbing through one of her spell books.
"Kat!" Dan screeched at her.
She stirred, put the book on the covers, and glanced around the room. Seeing nothing, she shrugged and picked up the book.
"Kat, put the damn book down! You have to... you've got to fix this!"
"Dan?" A tentative tendril of thought connected with her sibling's agitated brain.
"Oh, thank god," Dan replied. "You can hear me! Can you see me?"
He tried to propel himself closer to her bed.
Kat took in a little gasp of air when the indistinct outline of what could best be described as a holographic lobster phasing in and out of reality appeared and hovered about a foot over her bed. Dan managed to manifest the crustacean form in fits and starts in front of her. "Dan? What in Hecate's seven prime spells have you done now?"
He sighed and began the long story, starting with her role in leaving him trapped and helpless in the restaurant's display tank and ending with the momentous jolt caused by the careless employees. "Just tell me how we can fix this," he finished.
Her thoughts became evasive and he felt her throwing up some shields. "Kat!?"
"Take it easy, Casper the Lobster Ghost," she joked, but he didn't laugh.
"Wait! You're seeing me a lobster, not a human?"
"Yep."
He produced a mental volley of colorful curses. "You told me you could re-spawn me!"
"Well, how could I know you'd go and get yourself electrocuted?" Kat said defensively.
She was trying to think, but Dan's panicked thoughts battered at her. "On the positive side, it's not every family that has both a shapeshifter and a ghost," she said.
Dan groaned angrily. "I can still get eaten," he said. "My body's still back at the restaurant."
"That's good. Why didn't you say so to begin with?"
