"So, what was it like growing up like this, or did you one day just randomly wake up like this?" asked Melody curiously.
"Do you want the truth or something you could actually believe?" Replied Jen after giving it a moment of thought. At this point, she didn't want to come off as crazy too, so she asked this just as a prelude.
"The truth obviously. Unless you can't do it." Said Melody, which instantly peaked Jen's interest. There was something about how she worded the sentance that stood out. She said "can't", not "wont", or "don't feel like it". Can't has a very specific meaning behind it which is different than those other options. It implies that something is preventingyou from doing something. "What do you mean by saying unless I can't do it?"
"Can't, won't, so what?"
"Can't has implication behind it. What do you know?"
Melody pauses for a few moments before she takes a deep breath. "Don't call me crazy ok, but I know that this town curse is not just a myth. You see, my current body isn't natural, I got cursed to look like this. Well, at the time I considered it a curse, but its been a few years since, and now I consider it to be a blessing. No one hates me for having it, and it even keeps away men at night when I am out alone, which is helpful. But part of the curse I received forbid me from saying who cursed me to anyone. So when I saw your situation, it just made me think about it. But if I am wrong about this, then I apologize."
"No, you are spot on actually. Which is surprising to say the least because one of the points was that everyone but myself and the one who cursed me would see me as being nothing but normal. So I am kind of impressed that you managed to even figure it out. I didn't say anything because everyone would just take it as a joke." says Jen.
Melody nods in agreement. You are right, you agreeing just now sounded like a joke to me. But, as I am in the same boat as you, I think I am able to somewhat get passed that. Like, you seem to be normal, but for no real reason though. You look normal, and yet I can't think of a single other person who looks like you, or has the same characteristics. So in that is the flaw with that curse point. My curse was worded similarly, but said that 'no one would question it' and not 'everyone would see it as normal'. By the way, do you still have the curse?"
"No, I was dared to give it back."
"What? You can't do that. I mean, sure the effect of whatever you say will still happen to that person, but you can't force someone to return the curse against their will. So you should still be able to pass on the curse. Here try using it on me, just make sure it is something easily noticeable."
