Pleasure Island

Looking

Zoë opened the door and stepped into her apartment to see that Amanda apparently hadn't gotten dressed all day, standing there wordlessly regarding her.

"Did you remember to eat?"

"Uh, some, a sandwich, I think."

"Geez, it's like I'm babysitting. Don't worry so much, Amanda. I see you've gotten a little worse, but it comes and it goes. Besides, you'll like it when the change comes."

"It's not that...it's just...Zoë, when Caitlin became the Wolf Queen, where was she in Wolf Lake?"

"Oh, some cave. I don't even remember how to get there."

"I was hoping we could go there."

"Why?"

Amanda sighed, then answered, "no reason."

"Amanda, she's dead. I know you feel guilty, but you were just following orders. I still long for her, but that won't bring her back. Just enjoy what you have now. Besides, did you hear on the radio? Sky's still wonky, so we get to let our hair down tonight!"

"What...what do you mean?"

"What do you think I mean? The full moon! Party time for the Fielder girls!"

"Wooh!" Penny cried as she slammed on the gas after picking up Susan, "Party time with the Catholic girls!"

"I still can't believe you convinced my dad to let us go. They're worse than we are!"

"That's why they're fun, hon. Besides, the fact that the party is starting before dark makes him think it'll be all ginger ale fruit punch and brownie sales."

"I'm still embarrassed that I'll have to show off those scratches down my back that you gave me."

"Hell, I said I was sorry. I was tripping, what do you expect? It'll be a love-tap compared to the hickies the girls of Our Lady of the Spread Legs will be sporting!"

"I guess you're right."

"Of course I'm right," Penny said, grinning the impishly feral grin that had become her trademark, "I'm always right..."
It was a strange day indeed at Fielder College.

Carla Zuckerman stumbled her way through the halls of her dorm. Had she been in a better state of consciousness, the frequency of girls in jeans would have struck her as odd.

She dredged through History, dragged through English, and even slept through Political Science. She wasn’t alone. Every classmate drifted off, absently scratched at their legs, or was absent altogether.

Lunchtime was no better. Every cafeteria and on-campus restaurant was swamped, and most sold out of any type of meat. Carla chuckled to herself as she continued her streak of breaking her vegan lifestyle. It was vaguely amusing, how college and hunger had made it somehow impractical.

Announcements were made throughout the day concerning Vale Health Center’s extended hours, in a vain attempt to reassure the students.

Dizziness struck as she was exiting Langley Hall. She weaved her way to the nearest ladies’ room, and fought for space at the mirrors with several other students.

The girls stood in disbelief, gawking at their appearances. Each possessed long tufts of varying color hair, growing from their chests and shoulders. A black-haired girl in a Blink-182 cut-off had developed small points to her ears and somewhat claw-like nails. The brunette in the floral dress sported small but deliberate canine fangs. The Hot Topic fashion plate looked deep into the mirror, blissfully mesmerized by her own amber irises.

Carla gasped when her turn at the mirror came up. She possessed all of the above.

The others were in near hysterics. They blamed the new skin cream they were using, or PMS, or some unknown STD, or a dozen other things.

Somehow, Wendy knew the culprit when she turned around and leaned against the cold porcelain sink.

She was staring out the hatched window at it, rising before nightfall as it sometimes did. The full moon. It was a strange day at Fielder College, but it would be nothing compared to the night...
The dizziness was still with Carla Zuckerman as she hurriedly gathered up her books and dashed out of the Langley Hall bathroom.

It was silly, she told herself, dismissing her earlier suspicion about the moon. It was probably something in the water. The town's pipes were old, and they'd had water purity problems before. Everyone was just seeing things.

The aching in her jaw and joints had increased, as had the itching, but she tried to ignore it. Reaching the door to her dormatory hall, she ran her student ID through the scanner and opened the door, stumbling into the building.

Her feet were like lead as she climbed the stairs, but finally, she reached her floor and turned her key in the lock. She hastily went in and slammed the door, throwing off her windbreaker because she was too hot.

Then she noticed her roommate, Wendy Tomlinson, was home.

In the nude.

Wendy lounged on the couch lazily, and looked to Carla with a slight smirk, speaking, "Deja vu?"
