With her thoughts as ordered as they could be, Sarah finally tuned back into the conversation hoping that might provide some clarity.
"...you'll have to ask your mother when we get back. She might get tired of you spending all your Summer Break with us," said Sarah's mom.
Alexis gave an exaggerated sigh and said, "I don't think one weekend camping and one concert trip is all summer. Besides Sarah spent most of Christmas Break with us while you were away. And Sarah and I have been waiting for years for them to be playing by us right?"
"Right! They're the best ever! We have to go mom!" Sarah expected it to be harder to drop into acting like an overexcited teenager but found the role came naturally.
Throwing up her arms in mock defeat Sarah's mom replied, "I'm not the one you have to convince, but remember your mother wants you and Michael to spend time together before he leaves for college and isn't that weekend his birthday?"
Alexis laughed, "I'm sure Michael is just going to do something with his friends," she then elbowed Sarah as she continued, "Plus, it's not like Sarah would want to hangout with Michael instead of going to the concert."
"Uh..yeah it would be sooo unfair," Sarah responded as her cheeks grew bright red, "Anyway it's not for a couple months, so we don't have to talk about it right now."
Sarah's father asking for directions draws Sarah's mom's attention away, giving Sarah a chance to elbow Alexis and whisper angrily, "I told you not to bring that up."
With a nearly convincing innocent expression Alexus responded, "Bring what up? I didn't know birthdays were such a touchy subject."
"You know what I mean."
"Sorry Sarah. You started this when you mentioned you-know-what in front of you-know-who."
And surprisingly Sarah instantly knew what that was supposed to be referencing, "It was an accident!"
The two locked eyes with serious faces for a moment before bursting into laughter. Having to relive this period of her life might not be so bad after all.
