As Jacob searches desperately for a place she can lay low, her gaze lands upon the preschool across the street. Judging by her lack of potty training, she’s a bit young for preschool, but she’s big for her age, so she might be able to pass as an older kid who’s just struggling to get out of diapers. She waits for traffic to die down and makes a mad dash across the street. A while back, she actually babysat a kid who went to this preschool, so she knows that there is a play area in the back. Hopefully, she can sneak in and blend in with the other kids.
Jacob sneaks around back. The play area is fenced in, but she spots a gate. She stands on her tiptoes to unlatch it and slips inside the yard. Apparently, it’s play time. The yard is filled with children probably a bit older than her, but still roughly her size. She closes the gate and toddles over to a young man supervising the children.
“Mithew?” she lisps cutely. The man looks down. He smiles at her.
“Something wrong, sweetie?”
“I had to potty, but didn’t wealize in time,” she says shyly.
“It’s okay. Did you pee or poop?”
“Bof.”
“Ah. Okay.” The man frowns thoughtfully. “I didn’t think we had any kids in diapers today.” He shakes his head. “Never mind. Let’s get you changed!” The man picks her up and brings her inside. He carries her through a few rooms and down a hall before laying her on a changing table.
“Fank ooh,” Jacob says as sweetly as she can. The man beams.
“You have such good manners!” he says. He removes her diaper and wipes her down. Jacob shivers slightly at the cold baby wipes. “Most kids on this table squirm up a storm!” Jacob giggles. The man tapes a fresh diaper on her. Someone walks over to the table. The man looks over. “Oh, are you here for your volunteering hours?”
“Yep,” the person says.
“Great. You can take this little sweetie back outside.” The man hands Jacob over. Jacob stares up at the person, instantly recognizing them. It’s…
