Unfortunately Mary had missed a lone butterfly freely moving around the lab. It managed to enter the teleport chamber right before the door closed and placed itself right on top of the girl’s head without her noticing. What she did notice was a weird alert sounding through the chamber, but before she could really contemplate it the teleport activated and everything went black.
Mary couldn't really describe what she felt, because how do you explain nothing? It was so short that she couldn't really experience it, but also took so long that she almost went mad. That’s how she would try to explain her experience with temporary nonexistence.
Slightly disoriented did Mary tumble out of the receiver chamber, to the point she needed to stabilize herself at one of the tables. The girl was slightly nauseous from her journey, but noticed some weird itching from her back, eyes and the top of her head. Maybe it was her experience in messing around with her father's experiments, but something was telling her that those weren't supposed to be part of teleport sickness.
She righted herself and moved to a close full body mirror, only to gasp at seeing herself. Giant butterfly wings scaled to her size were coming out of Mary’s back. Right now she was glad she had been wearing a backless top today. The wings were blue with black edges that had white spots. On top of that, as well as her head, were long, thin feelers coming out of her hair. The last body part affected were her eyes, with the irises now almost completely making them up. She quickly realized her eyesight had gotten sharper, even if it made her look like an anime character.
After admiring her body from all sides to ensure there weren't any more changes, Mary walked to the computer terminal and saw all the various error messages spread across it. It was a miracle the teleport still activated in spite of those. It didn't take long to spot the main issue. “A butterfly… yeah that explains it. Well, it could’ve gone worse.”
As Mary contemplated on whether she should try and find a way to turn back or try out her new body first, an important thought entered her head. “Wait, how did a butterfly get in here?”
It took some searching, but soon Mary found a side chamber filled to the brim with cages, aquariums and terrariums of all sizes filled with animals of all kinds. But quickly it became apparent that those animals were not normal. A super fast spider, a piranha with another mouth in its mouth, a shrinking komodo dragon and actually electric jellyfish were just some of the scientific marvels she spotted. “Looks like dad experimented with genetics again. But if the butterfly came from here, does that mean it also had some changes done to it… and could those have carried over to me now?”
The half-butterfly girl found an empty container with an open lid, probably where the butterfly came from. And thankfully it came with a note of its contents and, more importantly, what it could do.
