You continue to step back and turn for the door, hearing a pathetic whimper from behind you. You head back across the hall and step back into the other room, closing that door behind you again. You wait for six minutes by your watch before Dr. Hurley comes back. At first you feel distinctly nervous and expect her to mention what you just saw, but she doesn’t.
"Well," she says to you, "if your forms are filled out, we’re ready to begin. As you may know, we’ve made some truly fabulous leaps in the field of biological engineering in this company. We’re nearly ready to unveil a project that has been in the works for over twelve years, but we need some willing volunteers to help us test out the finished product now that we have the FDA’s approval for human trials."
Human trials. The thought of the imprisoned shadowy something in the other room knaws at your mind, and you begin to feel uncomfortable. You look up to see Hurley holding a large metallic gun of sorts in her hand. A meter on the side reads green, and there is a dial on the side, but you can’t make out what the dial says. "This," she says, "is the result of our years of research. It may drastically alter the future of mankind for the better, and just think that you have expressed interest to be a part of it! So, if you’re ready, we can start the process without delay."
A thousand questions fill your mind, and you can’t shake the image of what you’ve seen earlier.
"So?" Dr. Hurley says in the sweetest possible voice.
