Grant can only sulk as a young woman comes into the room and is directed to his playpen. The young woman comes over, smiling.
“You must be Grant,” she coos. Grant glares at her. “Aw, someone’s a grumpy goose!” The woman picks Grant up and nestles him against her chest. “Don’t worry, you’ll be a lot happier at a proper daycare.”
“Thanks for picking him up,” the supervisor says, coming over. The woman shrugs.
“It’s fine. We’re trained in dealing with difficult kids. You guys aren’t. Were you able to contact his family?”
“No. And the girl he came in with seems to have snuck out in the chaos.”
“Well, if the girl he came with shows up again, send her our way. We’re pretty good at keeping kids from wandering off.”
“Thanks again Kelsey.”
“No problem.” Kelsey carries Grant out of the police station and over to a van with “Green Hills Daycare” painted on the side. She opens the door and buckles Grant into a car seat. “Be good, okay?” Kelsey says, poking Grant’s nose playfully. Grant glares at her. “Hopefully this will turn that frown upside down.” Kelsey pops a pacifier into Grant’s mouth.
To Grant’s surprise, the pacifier does its job, calming him down immensely. He’s so lost in suckling it that he misses the entire drive to the daycare, only realizing they’ve arrived when Kelsey opens the door. Kelsey removes him from the car seat, smiling.
“Somebody likes his binky,” she coos. Grant merely suckles harder. Kelsey carries him into the daycare. She walks up to the front desk.
“Is this the transfer from the police station?” asks the secretary.
“Yep.”
“They said he was a terror.”
“After I gave him a pacifier, he calmed down right away. My guess is that his parents haven’t even begun to wean him off it yet.”
“At his age? Oof.”
“Yep.” Kelsey ruffles Grant’s hair. “That’s something to look into, but right now, he can have a binky.” Kelsey and the secretary finish checking Grant in, then Kelsey brings Grant over to a changing table. “You’re a bit of a big boy to be in a diapy,” she comments, opening Grant’s diaper. “But the police officer said you pooped, so we’ll keep you in one just in case.”
Only when Kelsey throws the diaper away does Grant see that it is yellowed; he wet himself without realizing. The discovery makes him suckle harder on the pacifier for much-needed comfort. Once put into a fresh diaper, Kelsey then dresses Grant in a daycare uniform. She brings him over to a playpen and sets him down in it.
“Be on your best behavior, and you can come out, okay?” Kelsey instructs. She then walks away. Grant sits down in the playpen, sulking, unaware that Tina has arrived at the daycare.
