“Thank you for coming, Dr. Haverford,” the supervisor says. Grant glares at the pediatrician. He’s not happy to be getting a check-up as a toddler. He barely tolerates them as an adult!
“Where’s the little trouble-maker?” Dr. Haverford asks. The supervisor points in Grant’s direction. Dr. Haverford comes over. He crouches next to the playpen, smiling. “Hi, Grant. I’m Dr. H. The nice police told me that you could use a quick visit from the doc.” Grant merely scowls. “Oof, tough crowd.” Dr. Haverford straightens. “Do you have a private room I could use?”
“Of course.” The supervisor picks Grant up and leads the doctor into a small room across the hall from the daycare. “Will you need anything else? An extra pair of hands, maybe?”
“Nope, my nurse should be more than enough,” Dr. Haverford says, opening a large bag and removing medical supplies from it. Grant turns his head and catches sight of a very attractive young woman. The supervisor hands Grant over to the nurse, who sets him down on the table in the middle of the room.
“Best of luck,” the supervisor calls as he leaves the room. Dr. Haverford chuckles.
“I’ve dealt with children much worse than this one.” The nurse chuckles as well. “Are you ready?”
“Of course,” the nurse says smoothly.
The check-up begins all right. Grant doesn’t really enjoy it, but he can tolerate it, especially when he gets to be so close to the gorgeous nurse. The check-up goes south when the doctor removes a large thermometer from the bag.
“He won’t like this, so hold him firmly,” the doctor tells the nurse. Grant frowns, confused. Getting a temperature taken wasn’t that bad. His confusion is wiped away when the nurse removes his diaper and lays him on his belly on the table. Grant promptly panics, squirming as much as possible in a vain attempt to get away from the thermometer. The nurse, however, is very good at her job.
“Good boy, Grant,” the nurse says soothingly as the doctor puts the thermometer up Grant’s anus. Grant merely moans softly in response. After what feels like forever, the doctor removes the thermometer and the nurse puts Grant’s diaper back on.
“Hmm. Medically speaking, he seems fine,” Dr. Haverford says thoughtfully. He sighs. “I was hoping it wouldn’t come to this, but…” He pulls a syringe out of the bag. Grant flails helplessly. The nurse grabs him again. Grant whimpers as the doctor collects a blood sample.
Tina owes him big time.
