The Magic Shop

Khamrud thinks he's got a new genie of his own.

"Well, you're price point is difficult to meet, with the right amount of patience, I'm sure this shop will have just what you need," said the shopkeeper.

Khamrud didn't plan on paying anything, because he had a plan that didn't involve him parting with any of his newfound loot. He looked at one of the shelves again, and said, "Those lamps are for genies, aren't they?"

"Well, they are certainly one possible receptacle for a genie, if the right spells are cast," said the shopkeeper. Before the conversation could continue to a point where prices would be discussed, Khamrud grabbed one and ran out of the shop! He felt his nose swell up and unfurl before him and then erupt in a trumpet-like roar. He new the massive length and flexibility he felt in his nose wasn't normal, but it was a temporary and necessary cost of doing business, so to speak.

When he was far enough away that he could tell no one was coming after him, he slowed to a natural pace so he wouldn't look so suspicious, and then he quietly slipped into an alley where he could get to work. First, he lifted his new elephant trunk in front of himself, inspecting the damage he was about to undo. He slithered its gray, wrinkly length around before him, disturbed but somewhat fascinated to have this much coordination within his nose. He could sense a flow of air throughout its entire length and even look into the very nostrils he was breathing too. He shook his head and got down to the next order of business.

The lamp in his hand was metallic and looked brand new, although he knew it could be very old. All he had to do was rub it, and he would have a genie of his own! The genie he'd stolen from had severely miscalculated by failing to change him into an animal all at once: now, he would end his punishment for stealing BY STEALING a magic lamp! How beautifully poetic! Khamrud heard and felt his long time thumping the ground behind him, and he didn't even bother to try to reign it in, knowing he wouldn't have to tolerate such an indignity much longer. He rubbed lamb gently, and -- nothing happened. He rubbed it more vigorously, but nothing happened again. He rubbed it with both hands, and even tried to rub it with his trunk. Why wouldn't the genie come out?

"I hope the poor creature didn't think there was actually a genie already available to it from that particular lamp," said the shopkeeper, more concerned with the fact that she may not have satisfied her customer than with the fact that she hadn't received payment. Oh, well, people always leave The Shop with whatever they were intended to leave with, at whatever cost they were intended to pay. Besides, it was too late to do anything now. It was time for The Shop to go to its predestined appointment with a new customer, in yet another place, in yet another time. If only her most customer had known that the lamp he had chosen was...
