After a few moments, the more painful feelings disappeared, but the overall strange sensation didn't leave Arianna. Unbeknownst to her, it was because the fruit she'd eaten was a powerful hallucinogenic narcotic. The initial influx of it into her system had overwhelmed her, but with that passing, she was now starting to feel the main effects. Her eyes were dilating, her heart was pounding, and she was beginning to sweat profusely as hormones and chemicals started flooding into her blood, altering her perceptions as they made their way to her brain. And since she had already not been in the best state of mind considering her predicament, this was a bad combination.
Arianna didn't know any of this. All she knew was that her head was pounding, her vision was swimming, and she had a sudden feeling of intense panic. Looking around didn't alleviate that feeling at all, as her vision got worse - she was beginning to see double, colors were mixing and becoming sharper, while at the same time shadows seemed to stretch and become even darker.
"Wha... what's happening to me...? Who's there?!" Arianna slurred, before suddenly standing bolt straight as she thought she heard something. She hadn't actually heard anything other than normal forest noises, but in her currently drugged state, they were being warped into something unrecognizable.
In Arianna's altered view of the world, the shadows and trees surrounding her stretched out into the visages of bizarre humanoid figures with disgusting faces, leering down at her, while their voices rang out in harsh whispers.
"Poor little princess," they seemed to hiss, "So useless out here alone."
"No jewels, no servants, no clothes. No better than a filthy peasant."
"Worse than that, just an animal."
"Yes, a dumb beast lying in dirt and eating scraps."
"So pathetic. No wonder the king's men haven't found her yet. They're probably not bothering to look for her."
"Why would they? Who would want someone so pitiful as a daughter or a royal?"
"Shut up! That's not true!" Arianna screamed at the empty air, clasping her hands over her ears to try and block out the voices. But since they were all in her head, that didn't do her any good.
"Yes it is, and you know it."
"You'll never be a princess again. You'll rot out here and be forgotten."
"Pathetic, failure, fool."
"SHUT UP!" Arianna practically screeched, turning and running in a random direction, trying to escape the figures she thought were tormenting her. Unfortunately, she couldn't outrun the hallucination; no matter where she went, she kept seeing those figures, who continued to fling mockery and insults at her, while she screamed desperately back at them.
This went on for some time, before suddenly coming to an end as Arianna slammed into something she couldn't see in her panicked and drugged state. She fell unconscious, mercifully ending the hallucination.
When she woke up some time later, the effects of the drugged fruit having worn off, Arianna found to her surprise that she was now...
