Laura wakes up to an awful smell and an even worse sensation around her butt. She slowly sits up. As she takes in her surroundings, she begins to piece a few things together. She recognizes this room as Kaitlin’s guest room, but normally there isn’t a crib in it. And the smell and sensation is from the very full diaper she’s wearing. Before she can do much else, the door opens. Kaitlin enters.
“Oh, good. You’re up,” Kaitlin says. She wrinkles her nose. “And stinky. Good thing I packed that diaper bag, huh?” Laura watches silently as Kaitlin removes a changing pad from the diaper bag (resting next to the crib) and lays it on the floor. Then, Kaitlin removes Laura from the crib and lays her on her back on the changing pad.
“I pooped,” Laura says sheepishly.
“I know. It seems like you might be stuck doing that in your sleep until you can get back to normal. But if you’re feeling confident in your potty training during the day, I’ve got some training pants you can wear.”
“Training pants,” Laura says quickly.
“That’s what I thought you’d say.” Kaitlin removes Laura’s dirty diaper, wipes her down, and then puts her in fresh training pants. “Second question. Do you want to run around in just your training pants or wear clothes?” Laura blushes as she realizes she’s completely naked except for her training pants.
“Clothes,” she says quietly.
“Again, I thought you’d say that.” Kaitlin grabs a toddler shirt out of the diaper bag and pulls it over Laura’s head. “Happy?”
“Hmm.” Laura looks down at the shirt. It proudly proclaims “Not Part of the Potty Club…Yet!” “No, I’m not really that happy.”
“Well, it’s the only thing I have in your size right now,” Kaitlin says with a shrug. Laura sighs.
“Fine, I’ll keep it, then.”
“Great.” Kaitlin picks Laura up. As she carries her out of the guest room, she talks. “You’re probably wondering what happened last night. Well, before you could tell me where the magic shop is, you fell asleep. It was pretty late for someone your age. So, I figured I’d just bring you back to my place and try to look into the magic shop in the meantime.”
“And?”
“It’s closed for the weekend. But last week, I requested Monday off from work anyways, so I can take you there then.”
“I’m stuck in training pants and diapers for two more days,” Laura says flatly.
“Yep.”
“Great. At least I don’t have to be around anyone.”
“That’s…not really true,” Kaitlin says slowly. “I requested Monday off because I have family visiting. My brother, Mark. You’ll have to act like a regular toddler around him. Sorry.”
“I don’t know how to do that!”
“Then don’t talk and act really shy or something,” Kaitlin snaps.
“I’ve met Mark before, won’t he recognize me?”
“I told him you’re Laura’s niece, Lacey, and I’m watching you for the weekend because Laura had an emergency.”
“…Fine,” Laura mutters angrily.
“He’ll be coming with us to the store after breakfast. I need to get you some supplies. Including some clothes you might actually like,” Kaitlin says. Laura nods grumpily. “Aw, don’t be such a grumpy goose! Here.” Kaitlin pops a pacifier into Laura’s mouth. She suckles on it instinctively. “Keep having accidents and sucking on pacifiers, and Mark won’t suspect a thing.”
“If you say so,” Laura sighs.
“Oh, one more thing.”
“What?”
“Mark was supposed to show up alone, but he didn’t. He brought someone else.”
They finally arrive at the kitchen, where Laura sees that the person Mark brought with him is…
