Amy awoke slowly the next morning. If she had had any dreams during the night, she couldn't remember them. It was like emerging from a dark, boundless void. Eventually, her mind fully emerged from its state of rest and she pushed herself upright. She ran a hand lazily through her hair to straighten it a little. It felt somehow different, but her groggy mind wasn't interested in considering the thought.
Seconds later, though, she snapped fully awake when she peered down at herself and saw that she was wearing a black nightdress. It was made of smooth black cotton and had short puffy sleeves. It flowed softly down to end just below her crotch. The squared collar had some black ruffles and white buttons ran in a line down the front. Definitely not her own pajamas.
She snapped her head around to look at her room. She was alone. But had someone come in and dressed her in this, without waking her up? Or had she sleepwalked into one of her roommate's rooms and discovered some of their private lingerie?
Nervous, she slowly pulled the bottom of the nightie up to see that her panties were different as well. They were black, with lace trim and a little black bow on the front. She shivered at the thought of someone dressing her up like this without her knowing.
But then she pulled more of the covers back and saw her socks. They had changed again, having grown up to just below her knee. They seemed a bit thicker yet softer, as if the material was different. She had a new idea; had the socks changed the other clothes she was wearing?
She jumped out of bed and threw everything off, nightie, panties and even the socks. Her feet felt cold again, and the carpet itched them furiously, but she ignored this and went to put on a fresh pair of panties, a bra, shorts and t-shirt. She put on a pair of her usual white below-the-ankle socks and went to the bathroom to freshen up. Her feet became hot from the abrasion with the cotton socks, while her calves felt cold in the morning air.
In the bathroom, Amy made another surprising discovery. Her hair had changed as well! It was the same mid-back length, but instead of her hair being comprised of wavy brown locks, it was pitch black and straight. Her bangs had shortened, pulling themselves into a straight line that covered her eyebrows, which had turned black too. Pulling at some of it with her fingers, it was soft and full. In spite of her shock at the change, she admired the way the lights above her sink shone off of it.
"What did those socks do to me?" she asked out loud.
"Did you say 'socks'?"
Amy jumped, but sighed in relief and embarrassment at the sight of her roommate Jessica in the doorway. She continued. "Sorry to make you jump. I'm still pretty tired but I thought I heard you say 'socks'." The other noticed her dark locks. "Whoa! Did you dye your hair yesterday?"
Amy stuttered, trying to figure out if it was best to tell her friend anything about the magic shop and the socks. She quickly decided to go along with her assumption. "Yeah, yeah I did. I thought it'd be fun."
"It looks all right. But you looked nice before. Let me guess, you're gonna try clubbing with a new look, right?" Jessica walked over and elbowed her lightly in the ribs. "Going for that mysterious, dark look at the bars right?"
Amy just brushed off the comment and the offending elbow, letting her roommate think whatever she wanted. It was certainly more believable than the truth. "You want to use the bathroom or what?" she asked.
"If you don't mind," she replied.
"I can freshen up later." Amy moved past her friend and went back to her room, slamming the door shut behind her.
Inside, she shook herself to settle her nerves. The encounter with Jessica had put her on pins and needles. She needed to find out if it was really the socks that were changing her, or if it was something else that had to do with the magic store. Having to come up with constant explanations as to her new appearance was only going to prove increasingly difficult and nerve-wracking. She needed to get out of the house soon, before her other two roommates had time to see her new appearance.
