Skylar used the machine several times, with mixed results.
First, Skylar made everyone one gender, thinking that would clear things up. Then people kept getting hung up on race. So they made everyone one race. Then it was hair color, eye color, etc. Finally, everyone was exactly the same, and people still found ways to be offended a or by one another.
So Skylar took a different approach, making 4,837 fluid genders. That's right, there were not only that many genders, but one could spontaneously shift from gender to gender simply with a thought. Race and colors were fluid as well. Social media became intolerable because if someone used the wrong pronoun (or even a "blanket pronoun") to identify a person in their current state, the person was publicly executed.
So Skylar made everyone unidentifiable. Then people became even more outraged.
So Skylar finally made a personal discovery: There would always be some people who would form prejudices based on whatever was at hand, no matter what Skyler did. And even on a deeper level, Skylar realized that this wasn't about being loved and accepted by others instead of rejected, but rather Skylar wanted to control people's perception. So Skylar used the machine to reset everyone, and instead became a master manipulator capable of altering everyone's perceptions.
Years later, when Skylar found another individual and they fell in love, unfortunately Skylar couldn't tell if the other person loved Skylar for who Skylar was, or because Skylar had manipulated that individual into loving Skylar.
Skylar finally realized whatever Skylar did, happiness eluded. So what was a Skylar to do?
The very things that made people different were the very things that made attraction and celebration possible. But it was a double-edged sword, because those same things made inequality and prejudice possible too. It wasn't that differences were bad. It was what people did with them that made something seem good or bad.
So Skylar realized some people did good with what they had, and some people not so much.
Skylar finally decided that they were happy identifying as non-binary in a 2-sex world. But the species barriers had to go - so the machine was used one last time to erase species sexual exclusivity. Now Dolphins could mate with Antelopes and have baby fruit flies.
As usual, beings used this for good, and others not so much. In the end, those who were greatful for what they did have and did the best they could with it for others and for themselves both, were the happiest people. And happiness was worth something in an indignant world full of malcontents.
