Relieved to have found some sign of civilization, you wander up the path to the mansion. Reaching the entrance, you lift one of the large brass door-knockers and rap it against the door several times. Several minutes pass with no sign of anyone having heard you. Testing the doorknob, you are surprised to find the door unlocked, though upon giving it a moment's thought you can't imagine that there is much of a risk of burglary in the middle of the forest. Hesitantly calling out, you still receive no sign that anyone is around, and you take a couple of tentative steps into the house. Wanting only to find a phone, map, or some other tool which might help you get home, you peer about the darkened entry room you find yourself situated in and see nothing more than a closet to your right and a door straight ahead of you.
Feeling somewhat emboldened by the lack of alarms, dogs, or shotgun-wielding homeowners, you walk through the small room and open the door which you assume leads into the main house. With even less access to the light from outside than the small entry room, you have to squint severely to make out any details in the dimness which permeates the large room in front of you. The only things you can make out are a huge staircase in front of you and a few pieces of furniture in the darkness to your left and right.
