Balancing Act

Author note:
So this was meant to be for the Further Orientation option, but I accidentally clicked the wrong one. Sorry about that.

The magical girl didn't stick around long - just enough to show a badge to the barkeeper that signified she did, in fact, have the legal authority to obliterate his patrons if they were demonic beings. He seemed agitated but otherwise unwilling to put up a further fuss, just grumbling to himself as the girl and her guide skipped out the door, humming to themselves as they headed down the street to resume their patrol. You were still utterly floored as you watched her depart, merrily heading off like nothing had happened.

"Little Tina's been one of our most promising new recruits," Jem explained, now fully back to her humanoid form next to you. It looked... off, though. She looked as beautiful and natural as any of the classically birthday card-friendly depictuions of an angel, but... looking at her now, you got the same sensation of unease one felt when looking at a just-too-lifelike mannequin. Like her exterior was nothing more than a shabby person-suit pulled over something else entirely. "She's taken to the job quite well. Should get a good three or four years of hunting out of her."

That wasn't a lot of time, given her apparent age - just enough for her to reach her mid-teen years, you guess. "And after that...?"

"Same thing that happens to every magical girl," Jem replied with a small sigh as she tugged your hand. Once again, the world seemed to move below you, shifting gradually back to the Guild HQ. "All the years witnessing so much depravity and violence will wear her down - and she'll leave this job a broken girl, her faith in humanity shattered, wanting little more than to be alone in her bitterness." There was a somberness in her tone, but not an ounce of regret. "I don't much like it, but it's necessecary. The heart of a child is one of the few things pure enough to properly combat the kinds of evils we face."

It occurred to you why she was stressing so much that you can't have regret in this line of work. You glanced back in the direction of Tina, considering how sweet and kind she had seemed, before thinking about what she'd be like a few years down the line. "I guess... letting yourself get bogged down, thinking about the things you have to do to fight demons... it's a good way to go insane, isn't it."

She was silent for a moment before coming to a stop over the roof of the skyscraper she'd shoved you from, turning to face you. Those eyes weren't her real eyes, but they nonetheless seemed to bore directly into your soul. "Brianna." She spoke your name, and it sounded wrong. Like it didn't belong to you anymore. Part of you was instantly certain that you weren't Brianna - you just were, and whatever name you'd carried before held no meaning. "That scan when you came in - it told me a lot about you. About your past, about who you are - or rather, who you were - at your core."

Lowering herself down to sit at the roof's edge, she waved for you to do the same. It took a second, but you managed to figure out how to float down and sit. "You were a woman without direction," she further explained, "And yet not broken by the world's evil, nor harboring hatreds or prejudice. You have compassion in your heart, and that's why you got this job..." She trailed off for just a moment. "But the first thing you need to learn is the balancing act."

"Uh, yeah, the Navy already gave me the whole spiel about being willing to kill..."

"Not that." She shook her head. "You should never be faced with a need to harm a mortal. If you must kill or hurt something, it'll be a rebel - and the rebels long ago gave themselves over to pure evil. There is no moral quandry inherent to eliminating them." You weren's so sure how true that could be, but you weren't willing to argue the point. "But you will see suffering in this job - you will see nightmares inflicted on mortals. You must always feel empathy for them, you must always care about their struggles and comfort them when they are wounded - but you must stop yourself from becoming lost in that affection. If you do not... our enemies will turn it against you."

Now it was starting to become clear. You had to care - you were angels, after all. You might have been eldritch beings beyond this beautiful veil, but you were still protectors and shepards of this planet's mortal inhabitants. It was just a matter of not caring too much, lest you get stupid, make mistakes, fuck up and end up harming your charges for it. "Okay... I get it." You sighed. "God, I was expecting you to just give me a crossbow and tell me to go shoot vampires or something."

Jem smiled very slightly, the closest she ever got to laughing. "Vampires are not inherently evil creatures - but you might have to fight a few anyway." She stood up, backing away from the edge of the roof. "In any case, we need to move on to the second phase of your training. Take my hand." You obliged, and once again, the world very rapidly moved beneath you, until you were deposited into a dingy alleyway of some grungy city at night. She led you through a door into what you instantly recognized as a strip club - and also a brothel, given the scents and noises coming from another wing of this sleazy place. It only then occurred to you that both yourself and Jem now lacked wings, though you otherwise retained your divine beauty.

"We need to end your virginity, pronto," she explained. You didn't even try and claim you were sexually experienced - she knew everything about you, after all. "You were human, but without a full range of human experiences, it'll be all too easy for you to disconnect from mortal struggles. So..." She gestured to the stage, on which danced all manner of human and inhuman creatures in various states of undress. "Pick your favorite. I'll cover the cost, you just focus on enjoying a little physical pleasure." Jem winked. "That goddess-like body of yours might be an illusion... but it won't feel like one for you and your partner, trust me."
