Matt trudged back to the barn, dragging the plow from the distant field before the shirtless farmhand finally freed him from the harness and gave the weary ass a slap on its rump for good measure.
Freed of the harness, Matt walked to a trough for a drink, but all the animals that had been in the barnyard while he was in the field plowing had already visited. He found her in the shade of the same tree. He didn't approach until he made certain the brute of an alpha jack wasn't in the vicinity. The coast clear, Matt ambled up to the jenny and meant to give her a polite greeting.
All he got was a cold shoulder and an angry stomp of her front hooves.
"Sorry, but the old 'not in the mood' routine isn't going to fly," Matt brayed. "I need this."
He shuffled on his hooves and crept behind her. Once in position, he reared on his hind legs and brought the front ones down heavily and clumsily on the jenny's back.
