Maggie's Farm

added by Physalis 18 years ago AR AP BM TG O

Finding yourself quite disinterested with the idea of socializing with the local farm animals, you begin to wander the property aimlessly. It is only once you have moved past the barn that a new structure is revealed in the form of a little white farmhouse. Not wanting to disturb whoever might reside there, you look around for some avenue of transit which might take you off of the property and out onto a road or similar thoroughfare. Nothing immediately presents itself, and with a shrug you set out for the nearest patch of woods, figuring that wandering through the forest until you reach some means of egress is better than wandering around on someone's farm and getting yourself shot. Unfortunately, not two steps into your renewed journey you step into an previously unseen hole and are sent sprawling. Even more unfortunately, your sprawl ends with you laying in a pool of brown liquid which you ardently hope is only mud. Muttering curses as you right yourself and attempt to stand despite a throbbing ankle, you are taken by surprise when a female voice chirps from behind you.

"That was some fall, are you all right?"

Wheeling around, you are brought face-to-face with a middle-aged and rather attractive woman clad in overalls and the other typical accoutrements of farm life. Not having seen or heard her approach, you find yourself caught off guard and fumbling for some excuse for why you are trespassing on what you assume is her property. Seeming the picture of grace, the woman merely listens as you ramble and then fixes you with a pleasant smile.

"Well, you seem far too lively to have been hurt badly, though you clothes are in awful shape. Why don't you come into the house and I'll toss those into the wash for you," she says, the pathetic attempts to justify your uninvited presence on the farm apparently having been unnecessary. Acquiescing to her offer, you let her lead you to the house. After wandering off and then returning with a robe, she sends you into the laundry room, and upon your return you find that she is preparing a kettle of tea.

The next hour or so is spent with the woman regaling you with her life story, the bulk of which seems to have been one tragedy after another. Her husband and sister had died when they were both young, leaving her alone to fend for the three children. The youngest of those children had died, and the two older ones had moved out several years earlier, having found their own lives off in the 'big city'. Now all alone, she was having a great deal of trouble keeping the farm afloat.

As much as you sympathize with her plight, you are somewhat anxious to get going. Running off to check the state of your garments, the woman returns and states that while most of the mud has come off, she doesn't have a clothes dryer and everything will have to hang outside on the line to dry overnight. Asking if the woman has any spare clothes which you could borrow, she tells you that she no longer keeps any clothes which would fit your frame, so it would be rather difficult for you to leave anytime soon. You groan, but the woman is quick to offer the spare bedroom for your use. Not seeing any other option, you politely accept, and then allow the woman to show you upstairs.

Left alone in the bedroom, you find yourself surprisingly tired. Though you figure that the impromptu nap you took earlier should have kept you going for a while longer, you decide not to question your body's dictates and lay down on the bed, slumber finding you even more quickly than you would have guessed.

The morning sun shining onto your face greets you when you eventually wake, and as you are roused to consciousness you offhandedly wonder what the new day will bring. The sound of humming reaches your ears, and the door to the bedroom pops open with a loud creek as your hostess comes in bearing a pile of clothes. Sitting up in bed, you watch as she drops the raiments next to you on the mattress. Reaching out, you pick up one of the articles of clothing and take a good look at it.
