Jeff watched silently as his sock-twin get a feeling for moving his new body carefully. It was normal for him to move, but to something that had been inanimate until now it was new and interesting, maybe even weird.
Five minutes into watching, Jeff got a need to relief himself and quickly excused himself from his new twin, who nodded while still watching his fingers with fascination. Jeff left the room, and so, the twin was alone in the room.
What Jeff didn´t know was the mistake he made with the twin. As he used his own data to create the twin, it also got a complete copy of Jeff´s memories, until the moment Jeff hit enter on the chronivac. And while the sock had become a clone of Jeff, including his memories, it still had the knowledge of being a sock, and that Jeff would let it become one again. Only that through the memories of Jeff the sock didn´t want to return to that state, because now it had all the impressions of life it never had before. And the vague chance that Jeff didn´t want to keep it human in the end was enough for the newly developed personality in the sock-twin to take action.
Carefully standing up and walking over to the computer, the twin quickly accessed the chronivac, and with it, both his own and Jeff´s profile. Knowing how to operate it through Jeff´s memories, he first set his own timer to permanent, so he would remain human. But even so, Jeff would still be able to turn him back into his old, crusty and dirty sock manually if he wanted to.
He would test Jeff then. A switch in some way. If Jeff decided to keep his new twin, he would abort the timer and set it to permanent, only it wasn´t the sock-twin´s timer anymore. It created the timer on Jeff´s own profile. The only visible differences between their profiles were the timer and the name. So, the sock-twin grinned as he typed the bracketed word sock behind Jeff´s name in his profile, while he deleted it in his own. And while he not saved that change to alter anything, it would remain there until the timer was either aborted or reached its end.
Then the twin returned to the bed and observed his new body more. About two minutes after that, Jeff returned to his room, smiling at his still naked twin.
“Anything you want to do now, er … I think we need to find you a name first, right?” Jeff asked as he sheepishly rubbed his neck, only now noticing his twin had still no name.
The twin looked up at Jeff and shrugged. “You created me as your twin, so I would guess you could just give me a name. But to let it be simple, at least in the beginning, how about calling me by your middle name Justin? That way we have time to find another name, and for now don´t confuse each other.” It was his name Jeff had always disliked to some decree, and if Jeff didn´t abort the timer, he would be Jeff instead.
Jeff smiled at him. “Yeah, it should work for us. Okay, Justin, what would you like to do?”
The newly named Justin smiled back at Jeff. “If it´s okay I would like to take a hot shower first. While it isn´t as bad as my sock-body, I think I´m stinking badly. You never washed me after all.” The last was said with an angry huff.
Jeff winced at that. “Yeah okay, I´m sorry. I know I should have put you in my laundry more often, maybe even switch a couple of socks around instead of just using you. Take a long, hot and relaxing shower, then we can get you something to wear afterwards.”
Justin grinned, that went better as he planned. But as he knows Jeff better than anyone else because of having all his memories, it was easy to play the right buttons on his “brother”. So, Justin slowly stood up and walked out of the room towards his long overdue shower.
While Justin showered, Jeff adjusted his former, now their shared room a bit. He connected all changes to the timer on Justin´s (really his own) profile. If he didn´t made Justin a permanent human, his room would return back as well.
It was easy to expand the room a bit without it looking bigger on the outside. Jeff simply copied his bed, wardrobe and desk for his twin to the other side of the room, and then started to change the bedclothes on the copied bed. He was sure Justin wouldn´t like that the old ones were on the bed for over a month already. With a sigh, Jeff also removed his own bedclothes.
When Justin came back into their room half an hour later, Jeff had just put the new bedclothes on his own bed, Justin´s still was bare. Jeff thought that Justin could choose what he wanted to have on his bed. “Oh, is it laundry day already?” Justin laughed at the sweating Jeff.
Jeff grumbled his answer. “I thought you would want fresh things, and then decided to make my own bed as well. Let´s get you some bedclothes as well as something to wear, then we can finish that.”
Together, Justin´s bed was ready in no time, and Justin carefully put his chosen clothes on. While Jeff wore a dark green shirt with brown shorts and white socks, Justin decided on a royal blue shirt and black shorts, but also white socks.
“What do you want to do now, Justin?” Jeff asked.
