...well a perfect match may have been a bit of an exaggeration. The brain compatibility was at 55%, but things were a bit dire for Tom. Before they found a match Tom's cancer had taken a turn for the worse and Tom made the decision to get his mind scanned before they had a match.
"Alice, I trust your decision." Tom squeaked out in his hospital's bed. Tubes in all sorts of holes in his body.
"Ok..." Alice said holding back some tears "We'll find a way to bring you back." However there weren't any good brain dead people with a decent compatibility. The brain scan had started deteriorating, and if they didn't do something fast there wouldn't be much of Tom left to transfer. Meanwhile in the maternity ward the body of a baby girl was delivered, but there was a complication. The baby girl was breathing properly, but wasn't responding to external stimuli. The mother was crying, but the doctor had an idea and contacted the doctor handling Tom's case. Alice and the Mother were brought together in the same room and explained the situation. The baby girl was essentially dead despite having a healthy body aside from her brain, and Tom's brain scan was deteriorating however it should still be functioning. The brain compatibility was also barely not viable for a consciousness transfer, but that may not necessarily be true.
"Essentially speaking this may be a bit of a gamble for the both of you. If you both are willing to give this a shot. If we put Tom's scan into the baby girl it's possible that enough of Tom will be transferred that the girl will identify as Tom. It's very likely that Tom will be very different, but it'll still be Tom in a sense. On the other hand if there isn't enough of Tom there we will be left with what will probably be a baby girl with a functioning brain... Although it's likely there may be some weird side effects. Is this something you both are willing to do?"
Alice understood that at this point the Tom she knew was dead. The man she was going to marry no could no longer exist, but Tom could still live on at least in some way. Whether or not the girl is still Tom... doesn't matter. Alice consented. The mother on the other hand did a bit more thinking, but looking at Alice... Even if her baby will become some form of some random man she never met... The mother's sadness was the loss of someone who could've been and her anticipation of raising that person. Alice however was the loss of someone she loved and knew very well. It was hard to quantify how much loss there was, but there was no reason why one had to continue to hurt. The mother consented as well.
The doctor did the procedure while taking as much care and data as possible. This was 100% an edge case that could give a lot of important information. The machine did it's best to take Tom's scan and apply it to this baby girl, and when the process was complete the Doctor, Alice, and the baby's mother were sitting by the edge of their seats for what would happen to the newborn. The baby seemed to be asleep, and the Doctor did tell them that the process was probably a little tiring. A few hours later the doctor found the baby girl was awake and crying. One win for bringing the brain dead back to life at least. He contacted Alice to come, and then he brought the baby girl that may have been Tom to the mother.
"This is the person who birthed your body." The doctor stated as he handed the girl who may be Tom to her mother. Alice came in to see that there was a baby girl sleeping in her mother's arms.
Alice asked "Do we know if it's Tom or not?"
The doctor said "I think it's too soon to know. The baby is still so young and weak to give much of an answer. What could be something that could indicate it's Tom could also be just a normal baby reacting to something."
The mother said "She seems to be doing fine breastfeeding though. Could be an indication that it's not Tom."
Alice said "Or it could be that h-" then cut herself off. No need to be aggressive against the mother. "Umm... not sure what to say exactly... I'm Alice, and I work as a tutor for kids from elementary all the way to high school."
The mother said "I'm Gloria, just a housewife and this little girl's father is busy with his lawyer work."
"I'm not even sure what I'd do even if that's really Tom... With the money and everything-"
The doctor perked up "Actually if there's consent with maybe Tom's guardian... We'd like to do some tests every now and then. This case is such an outlier seeing what happens afterwards would be exceedingly helpful. We'd help with the costs of raising maybe Tom."
Alice said "That'd help If Tom wants to stay with me but... In early development it may be better if you take care of... her Gloria."
"We can exchange info if you want to visit every now and then until we know for sure. Although for the name... her father wanted something like Alicia ironically, but maybe Tamatha?" Time passed and things were uncertain until...
