Just as Alex's fingers pressed together, his Mom reached the top of the stares, slamming the door wide and barging her way in.
"ALEXIS ELIZABETH MADISON, YOU'RE NOT EVEN READY?!"
Alex, startled, whipped his head around towards the commotion. Not yet used to his new center of gravity, he tumbled forward into the mirror, taking part of a clothing rack with him. There were two snaps; The first, Alex's fingers, triggering the mirror to take him to his next life. The second, the clothing rack striking the bottom corner of the mirror.
This time the journey wasn't instantiations. Alex felt himself tumbled about, like turbulence in an airplane. He could feel his body shifting, stretching in ways that shouldn't be possible. After what was either a few seconds or several hours, Alex landed face forward on his hands and knees in front of the mirror. "What the hell was that?" a breathless Alex asked, noting his voice was deeper again. A quick glance downward confirmed he at least appeared to be a man again. An electronic static emitted from the mirror. Looking up, Alex saw a series of flashing symbols he did not recognize. Alex began to panic. He had no idea where or who he was. If there was a problem with the mirror he didn't know what he would do. In a panic, Alex struck the side of the mirror, causing something to audibly click into place. The surface of the mirror shimmered, before resetting to it's original state. "Greetings User" it once again displayed, before shuttering to "Greetings, Alex Madison.".
Once again, Alex asked, "What the hell was that? Did something happen? Am I stuck?!?!"
"Beginning Diagnostics, please standby." The Mirror whirred again, a line of bright light appeared at its top and slowly moved down, before stopping at a small crack in the mirror's frame where the clothing rack had struck it. "Defect located. Time to repair: 48 hours. Mirror functions including: Life transfer, Memory Recall, Non-diagnostic communications will be unavailable until repairs are complete."
"Wait, what's that mean for me? Does that mean I AM stuck here?" Alex asked, shaken. "And what do you mean Memory Recall?"
The mirror whirred, "Memory Recall disabled. Subject will not have access to memories of current life".
Alex sighed, "Great, so not only am I stuck here, but I have no idea who I am."
The mirror shimmered another time, text disappearing "Returning to mirror mode". The surface of the mirror returned to it's normal reflective texture.
"Well," Alex said, standing to his feet, "Guess I'd better see what I'm dealing with..."
