Bryce was a good kid who had just turned 17. His grades were mostly B's with a few A's and a C in history. He was coming into his looks and found it easy to bulk up and slim down given his extra curriculars. Socially and task wise he had a knack for keeping everything under control. He had a part time job, a girlfriend of 3 months, a decent number of true friends, and a loving family.
Bryce's dad had never been a highly compensated employee but instead was frugal and when inheritance came, he went along as if nothing had happened instead choosing to invest the money. Bryce was encouraged (pushed) into getting a job at 15 when he could get a worker's permit and a summer job and his dad matched his pay in Roth IRA contributions. Bryce was angry initially but being able to say he had accumulated 10k in the bank made him happy, not that he could touch it.
His mom on the other hand was the spender, or more accurately, the indulger. She also worked and used that money to make sure the family took vacations, the house got new appliances, and the décor was often something new and fresh. She also pushed Bryce into his job and extra curriculars but for the life experience rather than retirement planning.
Together they made a good and functional family, Bryce was stable with a solid future before him and a curiosity along with an inherent eagerness for what could happen next.
In the weeks leading up to the "Reality Glitch" there was talk everywhere but between school, homework, working out, chores, football, and his part time job Bryce had been too busy to really get answers. Scientists have been saying it will happen "any minute now" for the last several months. Many people had quit their job reasoning, "Why bother when everything is going to change anyway?" and the economy was stalling. Others were pumping money into the economy by ransacking their savings and driving up their credit. Schools and news reports counseled the populous to accept their new roles if the reality shift is complete, god help us all if the reality shift is partial.
Then it happened.
