Walter a man long retired was sitting at a cafe enjoying his coffee as much as he could. His age taking away his ability to enjoy natural sweeteners had been one thing that made him cranky... also it was decaf coffee because his doctor told him to have less caffeine... Also while the waitress was sweet she didn't know how to make coffee the way he really liked it... the way his beloved once did... Least his kids were doing alright, and were having kids of their own. Walter just wished that the world didn't seem to have gone to shit with reality breaking down or something.
About done with the coffee the waitress came over and asked "Everything taste good?"
A little cranky Walter said "Fine... what time did they say that glitch thing was happening?"
"Ah, I was following the science and it should be soon..." the waitress looked at her phone and the time and said "It'll be in about an ho-" and then her phone turned into a rat. "FUCK!" the waitress screeched as she threw down the vermin which scampered away obviously confused. "That shouldn't be possible. It would only affect humans!"
Walter asked "How are we supposed to test something like a universal glitch?"
"Well obviously the scientists would know!" The waitress stated like that was an explanation. Walter was looking around, and things were randomly changing. As such most of the cars that were moving stopped as most of the drivers realized that driving while nothing was certain was probably a bad idea. Walter himself thought for a second and stood up and decided to take a seat on the ground.
"Should probably hunker down on something that isn't that likely to morph into something else like the floor." Walter stated after having witnessed a phone turn into a rat.
"But only humans should be able to morph and only swap with human characteris-" and then the waitress was silenced as her body changed into a bunch of marbles which collapsed. Walter cursed a bit looking at his own hands to see if he had changed in any weird way. His hands were still the same, and occasionally something in the room would become something else or de-age. People becoming animals, animals becoming humans, clothing wearing their once human owners, cats and dogs becoming lovers... Just mass chaos. This wasn't some wave... this was just reality seeming to break down. He debated on calling his family, but it might just make more sense to wait for whatever was going on to blow over... If it ever blew over.
Walter looked outside and it seemed like random changes were starting to end. He stood up and was careful not to slip on the marbles the unfortunate lady had been turned into. So much life probably lost... although there was also a lot of life gained if the rat phone was anything to go by. Glancing around the town was... mostly intact. A whole lot of panicking... Assorted living beings that may or may not have been humans, but still most of the living things that were still alive were human. Lots of random objects everywhere, but most of the buildings seemed to have held up in this small town of his. He walked past a lot where he could've sworn a dry-cleaners used to be and saw the building was gone and in the middle of the lot was a baby of some sort. Walter imagined there was a lot he could do, but he figured he shouldn't leave a baby in the middle of a ditch... Whether or not that baby may have been an entire building filled with who know what. It didn't take a lot of movement, but once he picked up the baby it seemed to be a lot more comfortable. Things seemed to be calming down so he got out his phone and decided to call his son and see how much damage was on his end. As he took out his phone out however he felt a weird sensation as the glitch started to affect him somehow.
