Jennifer looked ahead to see several racks decked out in large and intricate costumes. They had wildly varying styles and time periods, although one thing they seemed to have mostly in common was an abundance of lace. There were many more female costumes here than male, although some of the male costumes were also quite fancy. There were some everyday-type costumes as well, including his and hers overalls, three-piece suits, military uniforms, and beachwear. Strangely, there were also what appeared to be full-body latex and spandex suits that were colorful but mostly featureless. Jennifer couldn't think of how these were all related.
"This section's becoming more popular, so I thought we'd start here. Meta costumes are quite appealing to those looking to be their own conversation piece." Lola tugged Jennifer's arm and ushered her in between the racks.
She continued describing the costumes, stroking Jennifer's arm all the while. Jennifer was distracted, admiring the professional tailoring jobs, especially on the puffy lolita-style dresses and thick, multi-layered outfits that looked like they had been stolen from a royal museum. These weren't the quality of costumes she was used to seeing in a Halloween store.
"...and personalities, too, in some cases. These costumes specifically excel in those regards. It's all in the name of helping you fit the role and have a good time masquerading as someone else."
There was a pause. Jennifer realized Lola had finished talking and snapped out of it. She smiled and nodded at the red-haired woman, who frowned slightly and tilted her head. It seemed that wasn't the expected response.
"Not impressed, huh? Nobody believes at firrrrst. But you'll see." There was something about the way Lola favored her "R" sounds that was both unsettling and tempting to Jennifer. Lola gently but assertively tugged Jennifer's arm closer into her side. "Do you see anything that strikes your fancy?"
