You and your wife were just normal people, living their normal life, and just happened to be in the wrong place at the right time to personally witness a crime that would justify the arrest of the major crime boss in your city. For years, the police knew they were guilty, but had never managed to find evidence or secure any witnesses to testify against them. Until now at least.
The two of you ran to the nearest police HQ and were immediately brought into the back. The bad news was that you both were suspected to have been followed and were told that you both would need completely new identities until the trial. The good news however, was that just last week, a new technology was developed which would allow for a person to undergo an extensive transformation, changing anything about them. From something as simple as their hair color, all the way to their entire species. They even could mix and match, but that was not often used, as it would possibly draw attention to their witnesses, and that not many wanted to be "part-something else".
Nevertheless though, it was still an option presentedto you and your wife. You would likely need to assume these new identities for an extensive time too, maybe a few years even. So you were warned to pick something you felt comfortable being, as you only could remake yourself once every few months. You also were highly cautioned against picking anything plant-related, as while it is the safest, you would become completely helpless, and it would be very boring. But in the end, the decision was yours and your wife's to make.
