Back at what had been Jeff's home, his former pet, Fifi, a female Corgi was looking through the presets on the Chronovac. In this reality, she had just received it, or so she thought. Fifi was an adult canine female in her twenties, as humans and dogs had not only swapped roles, but lifespans.
Jeff had been a sixteen year old human teenager, but now was little more than a year old. He was the only pet in the house. In this reality, he'd never met his father, and he hadn't seen his mother since he was weaned, and never met his sister, as they all lived with other families. Fifi had got him at a pet store the previous year.
The canine locked the door to her bedroom, not wanting her roommates to interrupt her. She scrolled through the information screen for the Chronivac software, wondering just what she could do with it.
"So this device can supposedly change people into whatever I can think of. The question is, what do I try first?" Fifi said, scrolling through the features of the Chronivac. "What do you think, Jeff...should we give it a try?"
Jeff heard his name from where he was lying near her chair, and looked up at his owner, shaking his butt happily. He didn't understand what she was asking him, and just grinned at her, panting.
It dawned on her that she could try the Chronivac on her pet, Jeff. "Come here Jeffy, wanna try out something for Mommy?" Fifi cooed as she pulled the human onto her lap, stroking his hair, causing Jeff to wag his butt more. Fifi loaded up a screen on the Chronivac and began to type in a change that would test whether it worked.
Name: Jeff > Jess
Gender: Male > Female
She didn't want to do anything to hurt her beloved pet. This should be a simple enough change. Jeff wouldn't even notice. She shook her head, laughing at how foolish she was being. She clicked the button, and when she looked down at Jeff, the changes had already happened.
In Jeff's place, was a female human. The face was identical, but the body was clearly female, and slightly smaller than it had been. The machine had replaced Jeff with the female he would have been if born that way.
"Je-Jeff?" Fifi asked amazed. "Is that you boy?" She asked. The human didn't respond. "Right Fifi, it's a human, it doesn't understand English. Uhhh, Jess? Jess girl?" She tried again, using her pet's new name. Jess looked up and barked.
"I can't believe it, it actually works!" She laughed out loud. "But...it's one thing if a human doesn't know...what about people?" She locked her computer and went to find one of her two roommates, with Jeff...no Jess, trailing behind her.
She found her roommate, Roxy, a beagle, on the couch with her phone, scrolling through some photo sharing site. "Roxy, do you see anything wrong with my human?"
Roxy turned over. "No...what's wrong with her? Was she in my closet again? You know how much I hate human drool all over my clothes...sweet as Jess is."
Okay, nothing different there...except Jeff wass now Jess. Roxy didn't dislike the pet, she just wanted him...no her to stay out of her room.
She headed back to her room, Jess following her.
