Mad Science

To Live as an Anthro among Anthros

"So, what kind of life change are you looking for from us today?" asked Dr. Nagano professionally.

"Well, this is difficult for me to admit, but--I'm a furry. You know, the kind of people who are really into human-like animal characters?"

"Ah, yes, this is nothing to be ashamed of at all! Pop culture is full of such characters, I'd say that many people--"

"I'm not just a LITTLE BIT of a furry. I don't find anthros just interesting, or even 'just' sexually exciting. I see them more like the perfect examples of an ideal world. It's to the point that I don't want myself or anyone else to even be human anymore. I sleep in a pet bed at my house and wear collars. I dress up as an animal pretty much whenever I can--not just at fan conventions, but wherever I can get away with it, without people knowing it's really me."

"I did wonder why you came here in a fox costume..." she muses, looking down over your costumed body again.

"You probably think I'm open to everyone about this, but I'm not. You and your staff are the only people other than my two best friends who know both my real name and my obsession. It's getting to where I go out as an animal more often than not, seeing people I know but pretending I don't know them. Most of them are very normal people; they think it's silly enough that I still watch old-fashioned animal cartoons. I'd never be willing to admit I'm this obsessed. Even other furries think I'm nuts. But the fact is I'm absolutely desperate to live my life as an anthro animal, and I want everyone else to live as one, too. I want to be a furry character living in an entire furry world. Not just temporarily either, but permanently."

"Don't worry, we can give you exactly the life your looking for. Come, let me show you the machine."

Dr. Nagano opens a door and guides you into a large, metal-walled room with computer equipment lining the walls. In the middle is a massive booth with huge cables hooked into it from multiple directions. You gaze at the machine and its surroundings with awe. She informs you that, after a few more final questions to get your new life just right, you'll step into the central booth, and out of your old life forever (or at least until you change your mind and return to the clinic). You still can't help but be curious about the process.

"I'm sorry, but a lot of the science behind this thing is way over my head," you say. "I could understand the thing turning me into a real-life furry character, but how could it change everyone? You don't just advertise transformations, but entirely new lives in altered realities for the people who come to you."

Dr. Nagano smiles. "The principles of the device are simple; the equipment itself is not. As scifi writers everywhere know, reality is made of infinite parallel universes, at least one universe for every possible outcome of every conceivable event. It is not even possible to imagine the number of universes in which your life, or even the entire history of our planet, played out differently. No matter what kind of life you want, there are countless people living in various parallel universes who have exactly that kind of life. And no matter how good you think that kind of life is, there is someone going to their universe's equivalent of this clinic in order to give it up."

"Wait, so you mean there's already an anthro animal version of me out there somewhere, who wants to be a human among humans?!"

"Not just one," she answers, "but trillions. Trillions of trillions! The machine works by locking onto your dissatisfied counterpart in the other universe, shunting your consciousness over into their body, and letting you take over their life for them. Somebody who wants your human life here will come into your body and take over for you. And if you ever change your mind about living forever in the furry universe, you're welcome just come revisit the same clinic in your new reality. There will always some version of you, living in some parallel universe, who is willing to switch."

"Oh, ok, uh, let's just get this overwith," you say. Dr. Nagano is really making your head spin. But at least you know you this machine can take you into a reality where everyone is an anthro, and you don't have to make a permanent decision about whether your life change is going to be permanent. But the last question is the most important: what kind of furry animal do you want to be in your new furry universe?
