Dog for a Day

added A year ago A BM Canine

"Well, I'd LIKE to be a wild animal forever, but that's probably too big a change for my first wish. I should probably start a bit smaller just to test it out. For now, I think I'll wish to turn into a dog now and spend the day as one tomorrow. Not here, though, it would be too boring to be cooped up in the house. I want to live outside with no owner. That way, I'll get to experience what an animal does without being too out-of-place in the human world, and I'll change back tomorrow night so I can decide whether to spend more time as a more exotic species."

"A very cautious and specific wish, master," says the genie. "Enjoy your day as a dog."

She snaps you're fingers and suddenly you're outside on the sidewalk with no clothes.

"Ah!" you say, hurriedly covering your private areas. "What's the big idea? I'm suddenly naked in public?"

"Most dogs usually are, master."

"But I'm not a dog yet!"

"Everyone else already thinks of you as one."

You look around, and sure enough, no one is paying any attention to you or pointing out your nudity. A loud POP fills your ears, and suddenly you can hear A LOT MORE. You can hear people talking a block away, and beyond. A collie stops to pee on the hydrant across the street, and you can actually hear the trickle from your side.

"Wow! Animal hearing is AMAZING!" you exclaim, wondering if everyone except the genie just hears you as a dog barking. You feel your ears swell and flatten, and then they start to bend and sag. Soon you're playing with a pair of floppy dog ears on either side of your face, learning how it feels to perk them up, fold them up and down, or just gently pet the soft fuzz that's growing on their outward sides.

"This is gonna be fun!" you comment out loud. You look down at your hands and soon find yourself admiring the nice set of claws that has grown out, pleased to have something more useful and formidable than dumb human fingernails, even if they aren't the biggest or sharpest claws in the animal kingdom. You also catch a glimpse of your chest and look down at the fur that is starting to grow in there. It's mainly brown so far, and it feels VERY GOOD to run your hands over it. You spontaneously start kicking one of your legs out to the side, and you're still bipedal so you almost fall down. You decide to leave your belly fur alone for right now and go back to looking at your hands. They're lengthening out a bit, and part of your palm is starting to darken, as are the tips of your fingers. That's when it sinks in that your hands are soon to be an extra pair of FEET for you to walk on--perhaps a bit less useful than hands, but at least their starting to grow their own shoes for you, basically. You wonder how your pawpads are going to feel on the hard sidewalk after they're fully formed.

"Are you still enjoying your changes, master?"

"What? Oh, yeah. No kidding! I'm almost so much animal already. I can't wait to see what's next!"

Almost as soon as the words leave your mouth, you feel a sudden hard jerk within your spine. Then something that feels like a swollen tailbone gets shoved out your backside and starts to twitch. An almost unbearable pressure starts building up and down your spine, until at last a river of small bones gets unleashed from your spine, stretching out new skin in the process, until you can actually feel something long and muscular bending and swaying at your rear. Having figured out what must have happened, you can feel its rhythmic pacing start to quicken. Eyes wide and mouth dangling open, you look back and see a curved, tapered appendage swinging left and right behind you, sprouting more of your brown fur as it does so.

"No way, a tail!" It doesn't take you long to try to reach out and grab it, chills going up and down your spine when your rough, padded hands start to make contact. Some animals have way more interesting tails than dogs, and one of the things you hated about being human was that humans don't have any. We're missing a whole body part! But for the next 24 hours or so, you aren't. It's hard for you to hold onto it, since your fingers are shortening and your excitement makes you want to wag your tail really fast and really hard. But you do at least get to reach out and grasp the end of it before it jolts out of your grip to swing behind you. You hold your dwindling hands up to look at them, watching your thumbs shrink away until they're almost indistinguishable from dewclaws. You feel your upper arms start to shrink and draw close to your chest, bringing your forepaws closer and making it harder to move your arm in many directions. You look down at the cement and decide that it's time. You lower your paws to the ground, finding them a perfect fit. You lift them up and down, feeling your pads cushion each impact, perking your ears to hear the claws click against the cement. You look up at the genie, expecting to smile at her, but instead you surprise yourself by managing to wag your tail even faster than you thought possible.

Then a sharp pain tears through both of your ankles! A loud yelp leaves your mouth; your tail stops wagging and ducks between your legs. It hurts to stand on your back feet like this, even though your front feed are taking half your weight. You finally realize you need to get your ankles off the ground, so you do. You half expect standing almost on tiptoes like this to be unsteady at first, but it isn't, thanks to your front pair of legs helping you stay balanced on all fours. You look back and see that back feet are much longer, with claws growing out of your toes there as well. Letting your toes and the balls of your feet take half your weight for you starts to feel much more comfortable when pads start to puff out from the bottom of those to match your front paws. You soon experiment with taking four-legged steps along the sidewalk, soon settling into a nice rhythm to control your four legs. Your tail starts to wag again as you get the hang of it. You just can't resist trotting over to the genie and starting to lick her hand, knowing it is something an animal would do. She giggles and pets your head between your floppy ears. You worry this still looks rather awkward with your mostly human face, but you know it won't be human for much longer.
