The children were escorted to the back door, where the workers began to dress them in winter attire. Reina was the one to dress Selina, putting her in a big, poofy black coat, a black hat with cat ears on it, white snow boots, and thick, white mittens. Selina didn’t fight being dressed in the winter clothes, unlike the other children. Reina smiled at her.
“Good girl!” Reina took Selina’s pacifier out of her pocket and popped it into Selina’s mouth. “See what happens when you behave? You get your binky back.” Selina smiled around the pacifier.
“Fank ooh,” she chirped. Reina’s smile broadened.
“You’re very welcome.” The children were herded outside into a snowy yard. Selina made a beeline for a corner of the yard where she could see a break in the fence. She had everything she needed, now she just had to escape. But she was sure she was being watched, something she confirmed by glancing over her shoulder.
Selina kicked the snow idly. She needed a distraction to slip away. Just as she thought this, there was a loud commotion by the door. Selina looked up. From what she could see, there was some sort of brawl going on. All the workers hurried over to try to resolve it, including the one who had been watching Selina.
Seizing her opportunity, Selina crawled through the hole in the fence and sprinted away from the daycare. She didn’t stop until she could no longer run. Selina sat on the ground, thoroughly winded, and took in her surroundings.
She was in some sort of public park. There was a playground nearby with children ranging from younger than her to older than her playing, a payphone, and a bathroom. As Selina caught her breath, she decided to think on her next move.
