"Yes, Mikey! The clonesuit! Don't worry, I fixed that little problem we ran into last time!"
The clonesuit was one of the Doc's more incredible inventions, a sort of skin-suit that bonded with the wearer's own skin, so that even the pores and sweat glands were functional. The inside of the suit was lined with internal structures and gel padding that altered the shape of the body, and the hair was made from real human hair follicles, supposedly capable of growth. From the outside, you would appear as a completely different person, though the disguise is only skin-deep. Once bonded to the skin, the only way to remove the suit is with the Doc's clonesuit removal gun.
The little "problem" that the Doc ran into was the so-called character module, a series of electrodes that line the wearer's scalp and send pre-programmed data through electrical impulses to the brain, designed to help the wearer get into character.
This had almost ended in disaster when you tried out the first clonesuit, modeled after your English teacher, Mrs. Palmer.
The character module, as it turned out, was a lot stronger than advertised, and after an hour or so in the suit you started to believe that you WERE Mrs. Palmer. If the Doc hadn't realized in time, you might have forgotten your original identity entirely. It was a traumatic experience and not one that you'd like to revisit.
"It's okay Mikey, it's okay!" Doc gray blathers, holding up a strange little chip for you to see.
"I've installed one of these in the new clonesuit. It's an inhibitor, Mikey! It'll reduce the effectiveness of the character module to almost nothing!"
"Why don't you just take out the character module entirely?" you ask.
"You'll need the character module, Mikey! You'll be playing the part of a completely different person in a different time and place! The character module will be set to the bare minimum so you can understand your surroundings and properly interact with the people around you. Think of it as a sort of automatic translator, but for history!"
"I don't know about this, Doc." you mutter, as he gently nudges you toward the machine.
He hands you a pill-shaped metal capsule and says "The clonesuit and a change of period-appropriate clothing are contained in this time-proof capsule, Mikey. Your original clothes will most likely be vaporized."
"Wait, what?" you ask.
"Now you have everything you need, Mikey! Just step into the time machine and I'll go over safety procedures!"
The Doc's eyes are bulging out of his skull and he's literally twitching with excitement. It's hard to argue with him when he gets like this.
You sigh once again and step into the port-a-potty.
