A beautiful, antique, curio. She didn't know what it was, but it was definitely old. She ran her hand over the smooth surface as she examined it.
"Neat." Rachel said as she examined it. She held it in both hands and stared at it as if it was a puppy. "It's so adorable!"
That was all it took, Rachel's heart started beating faster. Rachel noticed the curio seemed to have a lid that could be opened. She struggled for a few minutes trying to open the lid, but was unsuccessful. It was a little too large for her little hands to pull down. She walked around the box for a few minutes, examining everything and still, no luck.
"Mom!"
Rachel waited a moment for her mother to respond. After a few moments Rachel merely shrugged. "I guess she left to work already."
With nothing to do, Rachel sat herself down in front of the box and started playing with the ring and lid.
"I gotta figure out how to open this thing." She thought as she played with the ring.
Rachel had always been a daydreamer. In fact, she spent more time daydreaming than she did in school. It was something that helped her cope with all the pressure and focus that she had. Slowly, Rachel became lost in her thoughts as she dreamt of the box opening. As these thoughts drifted in and out of her mind she heard a soft click that brought her back to reality. Looking down at the box Rachel was surprised to see the box had opened by itself.
"Yes!" Racheal hissed as her hand reached over to fully open the lid. Rachel examined the contents of the box. Inside was a necklace, made up of two gold chains entwined together. The ends of each chain held a small black stone.
"Wow." Whispered Rachel as she reached to pick up the necklace with shaking hands. "It's gorgeous."
The necklace felt heavy in her hands. No doubt, it was solid gold. Rachel ran a finger over the small black stone.
"Onyx." Rachel mumbled.
She touched the necklace to her cheek and closed her eyes.
"It feels so smooth." She said to herself.
"Look, Rachel, it's turning dark." Came a voice from outside the room.
"Huh? Oh, sure." She snapped herself back to reality.
"Make a wish, whatever you desire." Said the voice but now it came from inside Rachel's head.
"Whatever I desire..." Whispered Rachel as she continued to hold the black stone to her face. Rachel closed her eyes, and envisioned what she wanted.
"I wish for....." She paused, her fingers tightening around the black onyx stone.
