Leah decides to go play with the girls. She’ll probably have more luck over there than with the boys, and if she was seen playing by herself, the daycare workers might intervene in some way. They seem to be eager to swoop in.
Slowed to a toddle by her diaper, Leah makes her way to the girls.
“I Haiwey,” Leah chirps. The girls greet her cheerfully and hand her a doll without Leah even asking for one. Leah doesn’t expect enjoy herself, but is surprised that she actually likes playing with the girls. They don’t talk much, and when they do, it’s very broken English, but they’re nicer to her than most of her classmates in the high school.
Not long into playing with the girls, one of Leah’s new friends farts loudly. A daycare worker swoops in, inspects the girl’s diaper, and whisks her away to be changed. A different daycare worker checks everyone’s diapers. Leah stifles a yelp when the worker shoves a finger in the back of her diaper.
“All clean! Good girls!” The daycare worker pats Leah on the head. “Maybe you were right to come in pull-ups, Hailey.” The girl who pooped is brought back and playtime resumes. But Leah can’t quite get as caught up in it as before. The incident has made her aware of a growing pressure in her abdomen. She needs to pee.
