Leap of Faith

added A year ago AR BM

"Yes, big brother," you reply with as sickly-sweet a smile as you can give. Jinn seems utterly amused at your antics. He leads you gently by the hand to the swings. You glance up at him, eyebrows raised, then take a seat as he steps behind you.

You haven't had someone push you on the swings since you were, well, a little kid. You had forgotten how it felt, and tensed a bit in anticipation of a jerky push. However, Jinn, as usual, seems to be perfect at everything he does. So smoothly you would think you were on an amusement park ride, you found yourself swinging high in the air. You could not stop the pure grin that crept across your face.

Although you enjoy the feel of wind and the view as you go higher and higher, a thought starts to prey on the back of your mind. One of your favorite playground actions in your childhood was to jump from the swing at its apex, or at least as high as you could get it to go without chickening out. That moment of zero-gravity provided you with sheer ecstasy. As time went by, your leaps seemed to get lower and more controlled, probably out of worry of injuring yourself and also a lack of sheer tolerance by your body. You missed that freedom.

However, it occurred to you now that there was nothing holding you back. Apart from a catastrophic injury which would draw attention, you could risk anything else and simply heal yourself. Granted, it could hurt badly, but that would only be a momentary pain. Well worth the price, right?

With each swing, you convinced yourself more and more. You could not see Jinn's face, but you had the odd impression he was aware of your intentions. Still, you moved your body in rhythm with the swing, waiting for just the right moment. Then, it came. At the very top of your arc, you allowed the momentum to carry you forward and out. You hung in the air for only an instant, but it was a feeling you had longed for. Finally, gravity took over and pulled you down to a hard landing in the sand.

You felt pressure and a bit of pain in your ankles and knees, but gritting your teeth, willed your body to heal itself. The next instant, everything was fine, and you stood up proudly and grinned back at Jinn, who had a patronizing smirk on his face. Of course, you then realized Jinn wasn't the only one watching.

A real child looked on in awe, his mouth hanging open. You suddenly became aware that the height at which you had left the swing was nearly level with the swing bar, and should not have resulted in an injury-free landing under normal circumstances. Without bothering to check if any adults had been watching and without waiting to see if any children foolishly tried to emulate you, you ran back and grabbed Jinn by the hand, dragging him off down the park path away from the playground and into the trees.
