Leah’s still asleep. Tina breathes out a sigh of relief. She had been worried that Leah woke up at some point and had spent the entire time bored out of her mind. Tina checks Leah’s diaper.
“Dry,” Tina whispers. She smiles. “Good boy, Aspen.” Leah must have been right. The accidents were just flukes. Her potty training isn’t at risk. Tina lifts Leah from the crib. On their way out of the daycare, Betsy coos over Leah one more time.
“You’ll have to bring him back sometime.”
“We’ll see,” Tina says with a polite smile. She says her goodbyes to her coworkers and exits. At the car, she buckles Leah into the carseat again. Leah’s still fast asleep somehow. Tina kisses the top of her head and gets into the driver’s seat.
Honestly, Tina was expecting that Leah’s diaper would be dirty again, after everything that had happened earlier that day. With that in mind, she’d planned on going directly home, so that she could figure out what to do with her teenage stepdaughter who clearly needed diapers.
But since Leah was still dry, Tina didn’t have to go home. She looks at Leah in the rearview mirror. Of course, there’s always the chance that Leah wakes up in the middle of errands, which she would be furious about.
Tina starts the car and pulls out of the parking lot. She knows what she plans on doing.
