A new shop had just opened down the street from your apartment. You’d been hoping it would
replace the crappy takeaway that had been struggling there for years. Instead, a mysterious gift
shop had taken its place...or that’s what you assumed it was. The outlet seemed to be selling all
sorts of weird merchandise from party costumes to chinaware, it even had a kitchen sink
hanging in the window. With the name ‘Home Transformations’ you’d originally assumed the
store was selling stuff like wallpaper and upholstery.
“This is going to be lame.” You bemoan, tugging at the collar of your jacket as you turn to your
friend. Your bored scowl doesn’t manage to dampen John’s mood. The nasally man was
unusually talkative, strolling down the pavement with his hands in his pockets.
“Eh. It’s cheap entertainment. And it supports the highstreet! Come on...remember what
happened last time! It was a blast.”
“Fine.” You glower. Having been friends with John for so many years, you’re well aware that he
can see through your complaining. You were as excited about the game as he was.
The rules were simple.
The two of you would explore the shop for ten minutes. Then, using a decided budget, you’d
buy each other a gift. Later that night during pre-drinks, you’d both have to wear (or use)
whatever item the other had purchased. In the past, a bunch of your friends had done a similar
thing for a fancy dress night...mostly turning you all into a group of crossdressers. You’d known
John long enough to really appreciate what embarrassed him. You weren’t exactly sure what
you were buying...only that it was going to be hilarious.
The shop bell tinkled, marking the start of your ten minutes. In truth, it doesn’t even take you
that long to find the perfect item. With the gift in hand, there’s nothing out of the ordinary as you
pay at the till. Shooting a sideways glance at a rather smug John, you flashed your credit card
on the reader.
“Great.” The old woman at the checkout confirms the payment. Passing over the item neatly
concealed in a paper bag, she gives you a wink. “I hope you’re happy with the change.”
You thank her with a smile.
