"Five," Tom said after he heaved the dice on the board. He pushed his token up and... "Nuts."
The others leaned in to get a closer look. Beyond Tom's small stature, his token had come to rest on a space directly in front of the next door. The path beyond the door was a mere five spaces to the lamp in the center of the board. Looking behind him, Tom found the key space they desperately needed. It was three spaces behind him...and three spaces in front of Dave. Looking farther down the board, he noticed that Terry, who was the farthest behind, had not even gotten to the first fork in the path yet. If he chose their path, he could reach the key by rolling a ten. "Dave, either you or Terry are going to have to get that key," Tom said to the lion.
"It'd be my pleasure," Dave said, "But for now you should focus on your other problem." He pointed to the board.
Tom wasn't pleased at all. His token was sitting on a red space. Looking around, he saw two familiar red dice had been deposited on the floor where he used to sit (back in his 6-feet-tall days) between Hannah and Sue.
"All right," he said, trotting over to the dice. "Sue, take your turn and let's get this over with."
