Regina knew that the new, all-female world was a better world in many ways--less violence, above all. But although she never talked about it, not even to Savannah, she sometimes missed men and even--a little--missed being a man. But not the way the world of men had been--even as a man, enjoying male privilege, Reece Chung had been a high school teacher, an Asian American interested in science without being a real scientific star, the kind of man many men--and some women--seemed to view as "not a real man." But a world with men, but a world where "man," like "woman," was a role that could be adopted and relinquished, not a rigid category, that had a certain appeal. She had discovered this world a few years ago, and it was her "home dimension away from home dimension."
Regina allowed herself a moment to get acclimated to this world, a world much like her own, with familiar geography and up to a few years ago a very similar history. It was part of a string of worlds where an American adolescent boy named Ty had been gifted with omnipotence. Some of those worlds were nightmarish dystopias, some of them little changed by Ty, but a few saw Ty as a benevolent god (or goddess) and this was one. In this one Ty, genderfluid him/herself, had given everyone on earth ability to experience genderfluidity, not merely psychologically but physically. As the years went by, most people discovered themselves to be genderfluid to one degree or another, and people who stubbornly remained one sex were viewed as a touch eccentric, although not discriminated against in any way.
Regina took a deep breath and allowed her body access to the unique powers of this world. Her breasts shrank, her muscles grew slightly, and she could feel half her X's turning to Y's. Yep, there it was. Hello again, old friend, he thought. He stepped into the bar where the New Year's Party was rocking full swing.
"Reece!" said the burly black man at the door. "Great to see you, man!" He shrank, breasts emerged from his chest, his hair went from a crop top to carefully maintained dreads. She leaned over to give Reece a kiss. "How's the one guy that makes me wanna go girl?"
